Aftermarket Remote Entry Systems

Has anyone out there installed an aftermarket remote entry system in a 3rd Gen? I'm interested in installing one in my 91 SE that I'm fixing up for my daughter. Any recommendations and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bobby

Thanks for the reply but that's a little more than I wanted to spend. I really don't care much about the remote start or even the security system part of it. I'd be happy with just the remote keyless entry. I've seen several systems for under $100. Has anyone got any experience with any of these?

Thanks!

We're all friends here, no need for

Try Ebay. I got a CoolStart remote starter/unlock for about $70 IIRC. They are cheaper without the remote start. Pics are on my webpage.

if all you want is the keyless entry part, you can get them for $40ish on ebay

I've used many crimestopper units and am happy with them. There are Omega Research units out there that seem to be made by the same people too.

with a 91SE, install is gonna be a bit of a pain becuase you do not have a door lock timer or the stock keyless entry to tap the lock/unlock wires at
you will need to remove the fusebox and then you can reach the harness that goes from the car into the drivers side door and get the lock/unlock. You'll also need to arm and disarm the stock alarm but that's not too hard. I've posted directions before but dont really have time to type it right now so you can probably find it in the archives here.
if you're having troubles doing it yourself, if you bring the car up to Atlanta (or Duluth for the xmas break), I could probably do it for a small fee

Yeah, I got your email, sorry I haven't replied yet. I've got a 20 page term paper due tomorrow that is killing me. I'll try to give you some info later today or tomorrow sometime.

Well, thanks for all the advice everyone ...I decided to order the Crimestopper RS-900ER Series V for $89.95 + $6.50 SH (from LogJam Electronics) which brings it in at a little under $100. They claim that they will send me a wiring guide for my vehicle for free with my order. With what they send me, my FSM and Craig's wiring info, I should be able to do the wiring. That model includes the factory arm/disarm feature. I'm thinking about going to the junkyard a picking up a trunk solenoid off of a GXE or 92-94 SE. I'm not sure yet what I'll do about opening the trunk from inside the car (without the remote), that depends on whether I can hook up the solenoid and still leave the original wire attached...I guess I could run a wire and a button to somewhere near the driver's seat.

I guess we'll see. I've done alot of work on the 91SE in the past few months including installing another engine(used), upgrading the Bose system, KYB struts, brakes, rotors, fuel filter, throttle body cleaning, Bose amp repair and more. When I get closer to finished, I was thinking about writing a detailed diary/account of my adventure with a few lessons learned and some dollar figures. I wouldn't have minded seeing something like that in an easy to find FAQ somewhere before I started all of this.

Thanks,

Bobby

I thought you were just doing keyless entry
I've actually used the RS900 remote starter several times on maximas and had good luck with it. It does have factory arm and disarm like you mentioned which is nice.
nothing really too bad about the install, pretty straightforward

good luck

ok I've been doing a lot of searching and researching about installing remote start in a manual, and read somewhere that the gear shifter gives off some current when in gear and doesnt when in neutral. Is this true and could anyone possible enlighten me on this and how I could use this toward installing one?

yeah, the ECU has a neutral sensor that comes from the tranny and tells the ECU when it's in neutral. That's what I used when installing the remote starter in a friends car - 92se5.

it's a solid brown wire on the near side of the ECU (there is a big bolt in the middle of the ECU wiring, it's on the near side of that). It's on the top row of wires

ok. since I might have it, then what is/ was it's purpose when the engineers decided to put it in, since I can't see any reason in normal operation other than when installing a remote start.
