Stereo station display OFF.. then ON, then OFF!

Got a lot about aftermarket stereo issues during the search, but nothing like mine...

My '93 GXE has had the stock stereo (non-CD) since day 1. All of sudden, with no work done to the car (other than weekly re-fueling), I noticed that the station indicator/display went off completely. Other parts of the stero are still back-lit, just the green LEDs indicating the current station is off. Then, one day, it came back on for a short trip. And now, it's off again.

Good thing my favorite radio channels were programmed, otherwise, I wouldn't know which station I'm listening to. Has anyone had the same problem? Anyone know where to look?

Btw - everything works fine in this car, except for the Power/Comfort switch that came loose a few months ago. Thanks.

Hey MXO..

I think I know what you are talking about..

I have a 93 SE model..Whenever I had the Bose stereo on, the display went out..yet the radio kept playing. Then the radio would shut off completely..and the antenna would go down..And then after a few moments..the radio started working

It turned out that a wire inside the head unit was damaged. So I junked it and bought a Kenwood. Did not have to take out the Bose speakers since they have a bulit in amp in each speaker. Only need a special amp kit.

Hope this helps..

redmax - It's very close to the symptoms I see. I haven't had problem with radio going out altogether or antenna getting stuck (other than the antenna assembly that went bad).

Is it easy to take the head unit out? How did you find out that the wire was bad inside? It sure sounds like a faulty connection with the display, but I don't wan to get a new head unit.

Thanks.

MXO..

I found out the head unit was bad..when I started hearing a buzzing sound in one of the wire's. It was not a faulty connection, just the head unit wearing out because of age. At first I thought it was a blown fuse, but after opening the fuse panel up..I was wrong.

About taking the head unit out, I had it done by Best Buy. But it should be easy.

Hope this helps..
