Blinking SES=engine misfire...does that = Bad ignition coil?

My SES light turned on a while ago. The code was P0021 camshaft position actuator overadvanced. I cleared the code to see if it would come back. Driving yesterday, my SES blinked a few times, then turned off. Then blinked again, and turned off. Did that sporadically. Checked the manual and it says it means an engine misfire.

I'm wondering what is wrong with my car. : (
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

btw, i have a 2K2 with INJEN.

hey guys, sorry to drag this back up again, but i got no responses....

i cleared the codes and waited a while. just today, my check engine light started blinking again. i know that means engine mis-fire...but what does that exactly mean? dirty injectors? preignition? bad coils? bad spark plugs?
i'm going to check with an OBDII tomorrow, but seeing if you guys had any insight/ideas

thanks a lot

I took my 2K in to the dealer today for the exact same thing. Yesterday, the light blinked, and car ran rough. This AM, on solid, but car running smoother. Dealer said diags reported a bad coil on one of the cylinders. Sad thing is it is reportedly on national backorder (whatever that means) and will be about 2 weeks before it comes in.

I also have a 2K2 with an Injen intake with major pinging problems off the line and after upshifting. SES light came on once and turned itself off the next day. Dealer can't figure it out and they are telling me that the dense air coming thru the intake is causing my engine to ping off the line. I had them replace my ignition coils but did nothing to cure the pinging

how loud is the pinging sound? or what does it sound/feel like? i dont think i have this, but i'm not 100% sure. i always thought pinging was very noticable, but i want to make sure.
thanks.

i also have an over-advanced cam actuator sensor...grrrr.

Your car is under warranty, you don't list any mods. Why not just take it in and get it fixed?
I've had some backfiring, in the cylinder not exhaust, when new and after installing my intake but once the ECU relearned it went away. I've also had an SES light Code P1456. It was a bad O2 sensor, got it replaced at the dealer no futher probs.

maximadave as far as pinging I would check your gas. Put in some Amoco 93 and maybe a bottle of Heat. This time of year with the major temp swings you can get condensation in a partially filled tank, a bottle of Heat every other fill-up will take care of that. Pinging on a newer car is usually bad gas if thats not it maybe you need your ECU flashed to change your initial timing.

I only put in 91 Chevron Premium gas at different locations. I've switched over to Shell 91 premium and seems about the same.

Sorry I should have look at your profile. No 93 for you
I would have it looked at again maybe at a different dealer.

did you have that sensor replaced? I wonder if this is the cause of the pinging or not...

Has anyone else had these codes come up on a 2K2?

P0021
P0022

I found some info through search but not what the dealer actually ended up doing to solve the problem.

No list of P0022 in 02 FSM. P0021 is Intake valve timing control performance bank 2. P0011 is bank 1. Once this code is thrown the car goes in limp mode. There are quite a lot of causes for the code to be thrown (electrical/mechanical)

"This mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The ECM receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ECM sends ON/OFF pulse duty signals to the camshaft timing control valve depending on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake valve to increase engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in high-speed range."

You don't say what they did to fix the problem so they very well may have fixed it correctly.

Hope this helps.
