Is there anywhere SAFE to test vehicle top speed and handling?
Is there anywhere SAFE to test vehicle top speed and handling?
I am not a huge fan of flagrant disregard for the law, nor for disregarding the safety of myself and those around me, but I want to see how fast my max will go, how it handles (tracks, really) at high speed, and how it handles in "spirited" cornering.
How or where might I go to do this? What kinds of car clubs would I need to look into for more information on this?

If you live in Utah is it possible to test the car at the Bonneville Salt flats or whatever its called? It's where those cars do their top-speed runs?
Is it possible for the general public to go there?

Yea, there's a few abandoned bases down here (Southern Va), the main one is Fentres (sp?) where they'll let you test your car's top speed so long as you don't run out of road.

I live Norfolk and work in P-Town. It is nice to see another local on here. Thanks for the info on the Fentress AFB. I would love to take a run to see what she will do. I have a red maxima as well. (99 SE-L Crimson Blaze)
You do not see many red maximas that is for sure. I am about to order a Budget Y-pipe so I will be ready for that test run when that is installed.
Later
Patrick - well...check out sites like scca.com and other known national clubs that have local chapters, just to find local auto-related events. Then ask club members/regulars about a local road course. Here, on the road course I know of, it takes a decent amount of $ to run.
If you live in Utah
Thanks for the info guys. Right now, money is tight, but I can still look into scca. I really appreciate the suggestios.
I have had the max to about 110, and she felt fine, but it was really late at night, and still I ws not in the mood eo see the blue-light special...or to get hurt if I had a problem. I don't mind pushing her on back roads, but what keeps me reigned in is the thought that there are TREES right there if I F up. I suppose that is a good thing...

Big difference between speed and handling. Like everbody said for top speed try the airports, closed freeways, and the salt flats. SCCA events like Solo2 are great for handling but rarely exceed 50-70mph (course dependent). Higher speed SCCA programs usually require licenses.
Now if you can wait til end of March there might be something new coming go the Virginia area...
