The car doesn't purr like it used to...

50k miles on my 2000 SE/AT and for the past 10k miles, I've noticed that the engine doesn't sound as smooth and is definitely not as quiet as it used to be [at idle].

Any of you guys notice the same thing about your cars?

Any ideas? Could worn belts be causing the sound?

Hm, my car didn't sound very good during the summer either. The cold weather has made it worse though, I'd have to agree with you there. I really don't know what I should do about it. I think I may put in some fuel additive and "clean the fuel injectors" and do some other stuff to see if there is any effect.

Heh.

Try changing the spark plugs, switching to synthetic engine oil, maybe a tune-up?

the other responses to this thread make sense. I think part of it is the car just getting older. Kinda like humans, the body starts to ware down and eventually break. That sucks!

Clean the Throttle Body, Change some plugs, clean those injectors. IT should sound fine.

My front two struts are blown and my car just sounds horrible, and I hate driving the SI everywhere.

Replacing the plugs made a distinct improvement in the feel of my car. I cleaned the throttle around 40K, but, since I always us 93 Octane, it was barely dirty. I also use different fuel injector cleaners, not often. I do feel that if all of you with 40K or more do the plugs, you'll freak out in the way that the car feels. My car use to slightly idle at red lights, after plugs no more. Just replace with the same as stock, should set you back $60-70. Please post if you do the plugs.

This is not "normal" to replace plugs at 40K, they should not go bad at such low mileage (unless mods make them go bad). Our cars don't need any tune up up to 100K mi. If something is wrong, take it up to the dealer, have them change the plugs under your powertrain wtty. (up to 60K mi)

i heard that the plugs may go bad due to the MAF sensor going bad, as mine has. i need to check if my plugs are still clean though, to make sure.;

At 50K + miles, its time to get rid of those plugs. Also if you can't afford the plugs, make sure you atleast take the Plugs out and inspect each one of them before your 60K Warrenty runs out. The reason for inspection, The Valve Cover Gromets may leak and Flood the Plug Chamber causing the car to idle roughly. If so the case, put the dirty plugs back in, take the car into the dealer and tell them your valve cover is leaking oil into the plugs. Dealer will take care of this under warrenty.

Take the Vaccume hose off the Brake booster, and shove some Injector cleaner down that Hose. It'll caugh and scream for a few minutes but when its all said and done, the car will feel new again

Last car I had manufacturer recomended changing oil every 7500 miles. Not in a lifetime. I mean even when it comes to replacing it with Mobil 1, if u do it urself it's only less that $30. I don't think that if you spend $30k on a car you should go with a 100K tuneup. Just my $.02 The only reason that I suggested to do the plugs is, I felt a a big difference in my car.

actually, the maxima is prone to fuel fouling and it may require spark plugs before 100 or 60K.

I changed my plugs at 49K and noticed a difference immediately. Screw the 100K, for the cost of the plugs and the difference it made, it was worth it.

How much does it cost to get the plugs replaced at the dealer? Is this something I could do myself or do I need to get a spark plug gap tool and timing light and stuff?

This especially true, I have over 109k on my 2k and I changed my plugs a little b4 the "Recommended 60K Tuneup" and my plugs were completely fried and I do mean fried. The guys at Nissan wondered how my car was able to run that long with the plugs that way.

Forget all the garbage about 100K Tune-up, change your oil at 3k, unless you're using synthetic (then, I'd still watch that) and get your first spark plug check at least by 40K and definitely change them by 48K.

To answer two posts in one:

1. You will definitely get 150K out of your MAX. These are considered wear items and they go at different times for different drivers. Things to consider are geographic locations like always hot, etc... and driving habits. I got over 40k out of my brakes, maybe because I'm not to hard on them.

2. You can do the plugs yourself, some simple tools and a little elbow grease and you'll be fine. I am by no means mechanically inclined and I did it. The dealer cost was over $200. The plugs cost me about $60 on ebay. But you can find them on many websites for the same price.

On a final note, my car runs fine except for the first start and the squeak until warmed up. I am leaning to the culprit being the belts which I will replace int he next week or so Dealer cost $130. I will post the results....

I have also had my fuel injectors cleaned, plugs changed, trans services and synthetic oil since inception and it runs awesome. I try to do as much PM as possible and it definitely pays off...

I plan to get an easy 150K and still get some money when I get rid of it.

My only regret is buying the first year redesign since I had so many problems (mostly minor)....

I'm looking forward to hearing if the new belts did the trick.
