How do "offset" and "backspacing" relate to each other in discussing rims?

In RWD circles it is discussed as "backspacing," but here we always talk about "offest." How do the two relate to each other?

Thanks!

I think this right...

Offset is the measurement between hub mounting surface and center line of the wheel.

Backspacing is the measurement between hub mounting surface and face of the wheel. or maybe it's the measurement between hub mounting surface and the edge of the rim.

I was close.

Backspacing is "distance between the inboard edge of the wheel and the mounting surface of the wheel"

Backspacing is very important when it comes to clearing big brake kit.

You could have enough offset but limited backspacing due to having a fat lip.

Oh yeah, one thing that I remembered...IIRC MORE backspacing sets the rim IN further, LESS backspacing makes it stick out further.

I think...

Well..the face of the wheel might sit out further when you have more backspacing. The outer "rim" might not change at all.

With backspacing...the greater the number the further the face of the wheel is away from the hub mounting surface.

"Rear wheel backspacing is the distance between the inboard edge of the wheel and the mounting surface of the wheel that bolts against the axle hub. It is measured by placing the wheel face down on a flat surface; lay a straight edge across the inboard edge of the wheel, and measure from the wheel mounting surface to the straight edge with a ruler."

What's "inboard edge"? Sounds like the center of the wheel face? I don't know about you...but I need a damn diagram.

I would THINK that inboard edge would be the innermost part of the rim (closest to the center of the vehicle).
