FRUSTRATED Re: ECU Reset (Please help)

I don't have a check engine light on, but I was trying to reset my ECU after I got the y-pipe, by following the directions from the sticky post: http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html

The directions I followed to reset the ECU are:

RESETTING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

To reset the engine light is a simple procedure.

1. Turn the selector screw clockwise to its stop.
2. Wait 2 seconds.
3. Return back by turning the screw counterclockwise to its stop.
4. IMMEDIATELY REPEAT steps 1 to 3.

But when I was turning the selector screw clockwise (or counter clockwise) I turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned and turned about 50 times and it did not get to a stop at all... in either direction. WTF is going on here???

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should not be turning it more than 3/4 turn around. If you are, you've gone too far. It's very delicate. If you turn it too fast you won't feel it.

Did you put your key in and turn it to the ON position before trying to set the ECU?

You've probably gone and broken it already with those 50 turns but try this:
1. Turn it clockwise SLOWLY and see if you feel the stop.
2. If not, keep turning a little til you hear a slight clicking sound.
3. If you get either, stop there, wait 3 seconds and then turn it back to the spot thats marked on the left.
4. The ECU should start flashing any stored codes.
5. To reset, repeat steps 1 - 3 then take your key out.

If that didn't work then you'll probably need to take it to a mechanic or dealer to have them reset it with a computer hookup.

Good luck.

Make sure the screw driver you're using has a head small enough to fit in the slot.

Ummm my car was off when I tried to reset the ECU... I didn't even think about that. I was blindly following those directions thinking they were detailed. Could that be why I never felt a stop?

I did go quite slowly. Even if I did accidentally go past the stop while turning clockwise, when I went back counterclockwise there should have still been a stop, right? I didn't feel that and I did go slow counterclockwise for sure... and even clockwise.
