motorvate.ca updated: Alternator R&R

I have just updated motorvate.ca with:
-Alternator removal & replacement (with 28 pictures. I took 96!)
-About motorvate.ca and why I do this. (click on the dedicated link on the left side)

Visit www.motorvate.ca and click on "ENGINE", and then "ALTERNATOR R&R - PART 1"

You will also noticed that I have now added the ability to donate to motorvate.ca. I am not looking to make money, I just don't want it to cost me as much anymore. (I am worried about bandwidth charges since I posted the 2004 Maxima pics (5,406 distinct host served since Jan 1) I have 4 Gig per month and have already used 3.9 Gig not including today's 218 hits)

If you value motorvate.ca please donate. All donations recieved will used to support the web site.

Thanks!

Your website is an excellent resource for all of us here who try to to as much of our own maintenance as possible. I was able to rebuild my manual transmission from information and the excellent pictures you provide on your site - I didn't even need the FSM except for a few small details. I encourage everybody who has used Frank's site to make a donation.

Alternators are so easy to rebuild yourself. Especially bearings and brushes, which are what usually fail. Most of these parts can be obtained from your dealer or from local supply houses. Bearings are stamped with numbers and are easily obtained at industrial supply houses. Brushes are mostly universal and can be found at your local electronics supply shop. Even Radio Shack used to carry them. If you can solder, you can replace your brushes.

Even though I'm flat broke I'm gonna try and squeeze in some donation money. I used the info on his site to change my oil, do my radiator flush and fill, change my rotors and pads, etc.

I never did ANY auto work before, and motorvate.ca walks you through every step of the process.

Very informative, detailed, and helpful. I encourage anyone who is apprehensive about doing their own maintenace to check out his site before you pay someone else to do the work.

Great site!

Thanks Frank!!!! Your site is extremely informative and it's saved me money so I donated to your website.

FYI, your site it only lists Visa/Mastercard as payments for PayPal. I've always used AMEX and it's never been a problem. PayPal says it went thru so hopefully you can claim the money. PM me if the money didn't go thru for you.

Just visit www.motorvate.ca and you will see the PayPal icon to the right of the menus. If you don't have a PayPal account, PayPal will take MasterCard or Visa. If you want to mail me a check, please send me an email from the web site.

Thank you in advance. You guys are really great.

Take Care!

Thanks for your kind words.

(Don't tell anyone but I am going to be adding some OBD2 scanner articles (what to buy, how to trouble shoot, etc), R&R of the lower control arm bushings (on order, should be here next week), under drive pulley and how it can effect your alternator's output, and I am in the process of moving everything over to PHP/My SQL. (say goodbye to frames!)

See ya,
Max VQ

Your welcome, your site is going to save me on a big labor bill.. I just have one question, How much does an Alternator usually cost, USD?

I really don't know. The Canadian dealer quoted me $440 for a "Nissan Rebuilt", but I picked up a rebuilt starter at www.startauto.com for $260 Canadian. (About $180 US plus shipping)

Good Luck

Hey Frank,

Your time and effort in documenting the work you've done on the Max is tremendously appreciated! The guidance from text and pictures is great for a neophite grease-monkey like me as it gives me a sense of assurance that I could tackle quite a number of basic maintenance jobs by myself. As a result of the money I've saved from being "empowered" through the information on your site, a donation back to the Motorvate.ca site is coming your way.

Keep up the great work!

sincerely,
Felix

Thank you for the donation Felix. I really appreciate it. I have almost recovered half of this years hosting cost. (I pay $7.95 per month with gisol.com)

See you at the next meet.
