Cold Starting

I just bought a 2003 maxima GLE (1990 miles) and I have notice when the engine is cold or the first start of the day that the engine rev's high (sound's horrible) and sometime's I hear a slight rattling noise. Is this normal or should I have the dealer check this out?

I have a 2003 SE (1200 miles), and my cold day starts aren't pretty sounding either. However, once she warms up, she purrs like a kitten!

I'm pretty sure it's normal to hear somewhat "unpleasant" sounds when it's cold out, but if you're hearing something very unusual, then I'd have the car checked out. I'd say if you're hearing something metallic, then I'd be concerned; otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

Also, open up the hood and see if you can narrow down where the rattling noise is coming from, and then post here to let us know--maybe someone would have a more precise answer for you.

Thanks for the reply. I was more or less trying to see if this was normal. It has only rattled maybe a hand full of times, not much. But when engine is warm it starts very smooth (like sand grown potatos).

I think I read somewhere that this is due to the timing chain waiting for oil pressure on starts after sitting for awhile. I could be wrong. They said it was a normal noise. Anyone else?
