Alarm LED swap help ......

Folks:

I saw some posts about changing the alarm LED to colors other than the stock red.

Blue LEDs look cool to me and am all ready to try and tackle this task over the weekend.

I did a search - but still have questions...
Folks that are familiar, please share your ideas.
(1) Is there any writeup - with photos by someone that has done this ( I know RussMaxManiac did this - but the homepage link is broken ).
(2) Should I put in a resistor -- I got the Radioshack Blue LED ( 3.7v to 4.5v, @20 to 30 milliAmps ) -- Help me with Ohm's law
(3)Again a write-up will be helpful...

Thanks!!!!

I'm looking to do it too and was getting dead links as well. In my searching, I came up with this:

I guess I can answer since RUSS aint answer yet. Under the clock unit there is a plug with wires that control the clock and the security LED. The GREEN wire is the security wire, It is a GROUND switched wire. That means it is given Ground intermittently to make the LED blink. That wire should be hooked up to the SHORTER wire of the LED.

The longer end wire of the LED should be connected to the POWER wire of the clock plug, the color of that wire is YELLOW/Red wire. Now the new LED will blink and go along with the Security LED.

I think this should be good enough, but if anyone has more info please add!

Are these instructions for a 2k2-2k3 or earlier 5th generation? Just wondering because I know sometimes the wire colors change from year to year.....

I don't see a mention of a resistor in this ....
On a similar search, I got a post by Russ and BigDogjonx that mentioned some resistors --- I don't want to screw up !

I hope someone has the answer....

This how-to mentions resistors:

How to add LEDs to factory alarm

but I think that's only because they are adding LEDs. I'm pretty sure that the resistor is already on the circuit board for the security LED. I know there are some people here who have done it and no one mentioned a resistor.

My question about the how-to is this. How many LEDs can you connect to the one power source of the OEM led. This how-to has 2 additional leds. At what point would too many LEDs affect the brightness because of the lack of enough voltage?

Good point !
Maybe I should hook up a multi-meter and get the voltage on the board and check it against the LED specs ( 3.7 to 4.5 volts ).

I'll give it a shot this weekend and will let u guys know what happened.
