tranny opinion please

I have found a 5 speed tranny from an I30 with VLSD. It has 100,000 miles on it and it is out of a '96. The guy said it has been checked out, and everything is fine with it, and is giving me a 30 day warrenty. This will be replacing the non locking trans that is curently in my Max. Question is, Is $1200 to much to pay for this transmission? Opinions needed, I have to get a transmission quick, mine is not sounding too healthy :-) IF this is not that great of an idea please give me some other suggestions. Thanks

1200 bucks Your almost at the cost of a new one. Used tranny with 100K on it should go for a few hundred.

I did a lot of looking around for manual transmissions before I did the conversion. What I found was that a typical price for a non-locking tranny with over 80k miles was about $450. Many junkyard dealers will tell you a transmission has vlsd, and when you go to check them out, they're not. Those dealers who did indeed actually have a transmission with vlsd wanted around $1000, regardless of mileage.

You might be able to find a vlsd tranny for less than $1200, but it will take time and some luck. A new 4th gen tranny with vlsd from the dealer is around $2400.

this is a nationwide used parts supplier. They determined it was a VLSD by the vin #. I think I am gonna go ahead and get it. Since my original 5 speed is not totally shot, I will probably get it build the way I want it and swap again in a year or so.
