A few weeks ago the air bag light in the speedometer began flashing. I haven't gotten around to taking it in to have it looked at yet, but I want the damn light turned off. I took out the fuse labeled airbag (number 10 I believe) in the box above the clutch area. This stops the light from flashing, but keeps it on permanently.

Any thoughts??

Your dealer will be able to correct the SRS system failure.

Have it looked at as soon as possible, air bags save lives.

 

Well yes, I'm certainly quite sure of that.
Unfortunately that is not the answer I am looking for. I try to avoid dealers at all costs. Cost being the key word there. (I'm hilarious, I know)

My airbag light came on 2 days ago and I took it to nissan to get it looked at. Turns out the passenger side airbag is bad. My car has 62000 on it so no factory warranty left but they were cool and said they would be lax about the extra 2000 because it is so close. All I had to pay was $40 for hooking it up to SRS machine and 1 hour labor, so total was only like $100. Definetly take it in as soon as possible like njmaxseltd said airbags save lives.

 

Again, your suggestion is appreciated. But opinions on the innate value of airbags are not what I am looking for. Let me be clear:

I wouldnt mess with that system cause you might set it off.

easy killer...there is always that magic thing you can do to Fck things up worse than they already are, and as much as i know dealers are only good at FCKING you in the A$$ without lube...airbags are an INTRICATE thing...as much as I love to laugh at the mental image of a do-it-yourselfer catching an unpredicted airbag to the mug, that could seriously injure you...your best bet here is to take it to someone who knows what they are doin...b/c airbags are like 1.500 new, whereas this dealer might be able to fix yours for relatively cheap, compared to the aformentioned price of a new one, or the price of your well being...listen to NJmaxseltd...he is an experienced max owner, and from what i have read, a knowlegdeable one, also...we are only here to help, my friend...

To get rid of the light, you will need to replicate the signal to the computer of a "good" airbag. What this signal is, I don't know, and probably no one else does either. You honestly have to live with it until you get it fixed properly. What's wrong with it? I don't know. Its not worth messing with because if you set off the airbag, you will then have some real problems. What 96BluMax means by setting the AB off is that it may activate the airbag and cause it to inflate, that, you really don't want. So don't mess with it. If a flashing light bothers you that much, then go pay to have it fixed, or else you may end up paying a lot more to have your car fixed.

 

Put the fuse back.

Locate the driver door switch, covered by the rubber grommet (it's located on the body, not the door) before you start the reset procedure.

Turn the key from OFF to IGN.
Within 7 seconds, push the driver door switch at least 5 times in 7 seconds.
Shut your door (or hold the switch in).
Start the car, then shut it off.

You should have successfully reset the warning light. If it comes on again, you could have a problem.

My airbag light came on last year.
When I started to look into this, i found many other people with the same year maxima (95) had the same issue. it almost seems like a timed mechanism has gone off on all 95 cars.
So to make a long story short, you CAN reset the light, and if there realy is an actual fault it will return. so do it once if it comes back then it must be replaced/checked.
I dont remember exactly the procedure i followed, but it was very simple:
something like open drivers door, turn on key, turn off key, keep door open, press light switch 5 or 7 times with in 10 seconds, then key on , key off.
My airbag light hasnt come back yet!

Depending on what your "in warranty" date is, it might still be covered by your car's warranty. Air bag modules fall under the 5 year powertrain warranty. The $CAD 475 tab for my air bag module was picked up entirely by the dealer -- or Nissan Canada? BTW who does pick up the tab for under warranty repairs .

 

Just wanted to let you know that it did work and the light has stayed off. Just wanted to thank you for the info and to let everyone else know that it DOES WORK
