I am going to change the transmission fluid in the 97 5spd. I just want to make sure of a few things. I should use API GL-4 SAE 80w-90? Also, the drain plug is...where? It is located on a square pan or something? Anyone have a more detailed description?

Well is that it? Just drain it and then fill it from the normal spot? 5 quarts or so?

Yes.

The drain plug is on the part of the transaxle case nearest the engine, and near the shifter boot. It is not very big and looks like an ordinary bolt. There's a good diagram of the drain plug location in Chilton on page 1-40.

Yes. The gear lube will drain faster if you remove the fill plug and the drain plug. You may find it convenient to use a funnel and a short length of plastic tubing fitted to the funnel spout. Position the funnel in the engine compartment, near the battery. Route the plastic tubing into the fill port. Add gear lube until it begins to overflow. The capacity of the 5-speed is 4.5 - 4.8 liters.
