egr sensor

where is this located i am thinking it is located on or near the exhaust pipe but this runs from the front of the car to the rear? also what would cause this to go bad, besides high/low flow. and is it possible that there is nothing wrong with this when the code keeps popping up. because the mechanic who swpped my engine said that the sensor was fine and that the ecu is just messed up i dont know if this is true. it seems to me the ecu in the maxima is pretty, i guess the word would be smart. and if the sensor is out of wack would this decrease power?
