About to buy... ABS or no ABS??

Hey all,

Since my sister totalled my car a month ago, I've been looking for another 4th gen. Today, I happened across one that is in excellent condition. It's a Sterling Mist '99 SE auto with 84K miles.... but it has no ABS. I can get it for $10,400, which seems like a great deal to me. My question is, do you think I should wait to find another great deal on a car that does have ABS, or ****** this one up? There's also a black '98 SE I'm looking at that has ABS, not sure about condition (owner says it's in mint condition) or mileage, which he's selling for $7900, and this is my other option. I haven't seen this one yet. The '99 is a former lease car and has seen two owners.

What would you guys do? I'm leaning towards just getting the '99 because it's in great condition, but I haven't even seen the black one yet... but I have to make a decision soon!!

Thanks,

Doug

06119 - West Hartford. The '99 is in Middletown. I've been checking autotrader religiously, but haven't seen anything good in about a month (<50 miles).

Too late... we just went ahead and bought the '99. We'll have our mechanic take a look, of course, but barring any major machanical problems, it's ours. I jumped on it because I really did not expect this car to last through the weekend.

Well its nice to have, thats for sure, i found out i DIDNT have ABS when an old bastard jumped in front of me and i slammed on my brakes and i locked up and we bumped (all his fault), and yes, the Bastard hit my Max!!!! Luckily for his health and well-being, not a scratch on the Max

But i believe it was a $1000 option, and most people i know with 4th gens, DONT have ABS....

Good find on the Max though, it woulda been perfect with a 5sp though

fyi, yesterday it was wet, i had a friend in the car and wasn't paying attention and ABS saved my life. Its great and i will never buy a car without it. I was doing about 50 and someone stopped at a red light about 3 carlengths infront of me, i didn't notice until my friend said dude slow down. When i noticed i had a sec. to slam on the brakes and manuver into the empty right lane (the car was in the left). from 50 to 0 i slowed down in about 3 car lengths and i only ended up with about half my car over the white line at the light. ABS is amazing, it had just started raining and the road was VERY wet. Get ABS if its an option. (or you could just pay attention).

Good luck with the 99
That lease thing got me a little worried, do a good check on the car before you final step.

I don't have ABS but you have to compensate with a very sensitive foot and very sticky tires for wet weather (AA rating).

It looks fine to me, but my mechanic will have the final word. I found out that the only person to lease the vehicle ended up buying it, so it only had one driver and it was probably not abused since he ended up keeping it.

The '95 I was driving before didn't have ABS, so I'm used to not having it. ABS is useful, though, in New England winters. I plan to put on some decent tires as soon as I can.

I'm at school right now, but I'm excited to see it next week when I'm on my Break

Congratulations. 5-speeds are cheaper than automatics. This is a 1999. I live in the Northeast, where cars are expensive. Take a look at how much these cars are going for around here and maybe you'll realize that it isn't such a terrible deal after all. It's not the greatest, but I can't afford to sit around waiting for a perfect deal to come along. All of the cars I've seen in this condition, with between 50k and 60k miles, are going for closer to $14 or $15k. I am completely satisfied with this purchase

ditto, and the key to you getting your car for 7200 VQ30DE is the year, 1995 versus 1999, VERY large difference bud.
