Diagnosis- Bad loss of power (not electrical)

Need help -
I have a 95 5speed with 192xxx miles. Its been running great until today (getting 450 miles to a full tank).

All of a sudden I had a complete loss of power. When I tried to rev past 1500 rpms the car makes a loud whining sound, like chewbaca from star wars, the car the dies. I am able to start it and it sits fine in neutral at idle. The sound is coming from the front. As soon as I put the car into first and push the rpms past 1500, it makes the loud whine and dies.

This happened all of a sudden, the car was running fine until today.

Could an exhaust leak of some sort cause such a complete loss of power?

Any ideas?

Hopefully there is a check engine light and you can pull a code.
