Tranny is dying

Well, after months of boosting happily, the Auto Tranny is dying - slipping fom a stop in 1st gear constantly, and today for about 5 minutes I lost 2nd Gear altogether.

Good thing I just bought a 5spd tranny!

How many miles did you get out of it ? I just went thru same kind of thing with a VW, and I hope there isn't a trend for the Maxima.
I 've been changing fluids, and it seems okay, but it isn't as quick a shifter as other cars I've owned with the Asian auto- transmission (BorgWarner design)

75k on it - but I'm running 277hp to the wheels, and I drive it hard.

Re: Re: Tranny is dying

I would think that any automatic car, not only a Maxima, having been supercharged, is gonna have a shortened tranny life. It's just a matter of time.

the more horse power you have, the lousier your tranny shifts. and if you drive hard it will shift even worst. the transmission builds line pressure inside of the tranny and the ecu tells it when to shift so it doesn’t kick or damage parts. well that tranny was not design for that much horse power but still Nissan did good job. it could have been much worst.

My car did that ever since it was brand new from time to time. It still does that. I have 140k miles now. I hope my tranny doesnt die for another 100k miles. I cant afford a tranny bill right now.

Mine has DOn's VB Mod and Redline ATF - it never did this before this week.

But like I said, no biggie.

I do wish the Maxima tranny was more bulletproof (Like the VQ), but all in all it's not a bad tranny compared to some of the Domestics I've seen.

(Like my last POS car)

How much did you get the transmission for? I'm looking at about $650US ($950 canadian) for mine, but I got a hookup at my friends auto yard. I'm still questioning what else I'm gonna buy new and used.

Yep - since the day the SC was installed has been the VB Mod.

BUT - when the VB was installed, I was incorrectly informed to fill it with GL5 fluid, and it sat in there for awhile before I realized my mistake and fixed it.

I'm sure that did a little damage - the funny thing is that it shifted faster and better with the GL-5, albeit really hard shifts.

So yes, VB Mod, yes, Synthetic, had GL5 Synthetic for about 3 weeks.
