disconnect the ground of the battery and take a flathead screw driver and pry up the front and sides, it should just unclip. and then you can pop it up.

make sure the battery is disconnected otherwise you'll be in a world of hurt, literally.

Do you know if the cover is attached directly to the airbag unit or can just the cover be replaced?

umm
from what i was told the air bag cover CANNOT be taken off the air bag.

It's one piece. This is what I was told and I did not attempt to pry it out as a precaution.. the thing is worth like 700$.. i rather not risk it.

i had to remove the whole air bag when i ripped out the dashboard..

jason/bigsadler,
have you actually done what you described?

just curious,
i've always been told the air bag cover and the air bag are a single piece.

thanks

i can find out exactly what it takes on monday.

even so, if they are one unit, you can still pull the face off with the bag and disconnect the harness and fix whatever rattle was intended to be fixed (in this situation). but if they are indeed one unit then you cant just replace the vinyl piece unless it's simply clipped or bolted to the airbag unit.

gimme a day or two and i'll let you know.

I'm 99.9% certain the cover will not just pop off. When I tried to remove the mangled cover from my 95 (I doubt the 99 is any different) after the bag blew, there were a bunch of screws that attached the cover the rest of the airbag unit. Otherwise, the cover would fly off and smack your passenger in the face when the airbag deployed. You should take out the whole unit if you want to get to the cover. And be warned, they don't make it easy to get that cover off.

The airbag circuitry is extremely sensitive. To avoid accidental deployment, it is recomended that you disconnect both battery terminals, and then wait at least 10 minutes before touching the airbags. Any service manual will also tell you to never reuse (ie always replace) any bolts that you remove from the airbag unit.

there should be 2-4 "tamper-proof" torx bolts securing the entire assembly to the dash frame. The only place i have seen tamper proof torx bits were on a SnapOn tool truck that runs by my shop once a week. They cost about $30 per bit Anyways then drop the glove box down via 6 screws inorder to see them, once the torx bolts are removed unplug the airbag and pull out carefully. Oh and make sure to disconnect your battery 1ST!
