Popping sound (backfire) with Injen Intake?

Just installed an Injen CAI intake on my automatic 99 SE a couple week ago, and love the sound and performance. Just recently started hearing a popping sound over the intake growl at WOT from a dead stop. Right around 3K – 4K rpm then goes away. No popping during upshifts. This happens once in a while in first or second gear. Thought it was the rain but happens in both in dry and wet conditions.

It always happen when cruising around 40 mph and stomping on the throttle. The transmission kicks into second out of overdrive, RPMs rise from 2K to around 4.5K and successive popping (4 – 5 pops) from the intake can be heard. With the popping there is also a loss of power as the RPMs stutter, rise than goes away, gear shifts into third, RPMs drop, and more popping. I stop flooring b/c of this.

What could it be? Anyone experience the same problems? Misfire? Need new plugs?

47K Miles
Cleaned TB during CAI installation
New Fuel Filter
No vacuum/air leaks
No error codes. Reset ECU
Use STP Concentrated Fuel Injection every oil change.
93 octane from same gas station over the last year and half.

is it a sharp pop? mine makes a woofing noise when going from idle to WOT... do you have any exhaust flow modifications?

i'd say misfire
check out your plugs and coil packs.

i was getting the same thing (engine hiccup).
then when i raced one day, it had some violent jerking and loud sounds...so i got the plugs changed and haven't had the problem since.

I don't have problems with mine. Just like fierostetz said...I get a woof sound comming from mine, but I think that's okay. Are you spark plugs good? Make sure all the tube rings are tight

fierostetz - no exhaust mods.

the popping is definitely coming from the engine compartment. you can hear the deep woofing/growling sound then all of sudden it's accompanied by the pops and the loss of power, but continues to red-line.

i'll check the plugs and coils.

since the search feature is turned off, anyone with the link to test coils with multi-voltage meter? btw, where are the coils located?

thanks!

retighten the silicone hose pieces that go between the pipes. I had the same proplem until i realized that one of the hoseclamps was sitting right on the edge of the pipes, so that there was a leak in the hose. I retightened everything, and never had another problem.
