Mechanic overfilled my ATF...

When I checked my ATF after having it flushed and refilled yesterday it was way over the Full line, by about a half inch. I had to drive the car to school this morning, but I'm having the mechanic drain off enough to get it within the limits right now. So my question is how bad is overfilling the ATF??? Did I do any damage while driving it today?

Did you check the ATF cold. I may be wrong, but in other vehicles, it stated to check the ATF level after the car had been running. The opposite is true of motor oil which you check cold.

Was there any foam on the dipstick? If not then you are probably ok. For the little amount that you drove it there shouldn't be much of a problem.

No, there was no foam on the dipstick, thankfully. I got my car back and now its within the cold limits, but i havent driven it much so i will check it latter when its hot. I think it's a little on the low side now, sigh... O well it should be ok, at least its not overfilled.

Uhhh.....stupid tranny flush machines. Looks like mine's isnt the only 1 that does this. For some reason when we flush a tranny it throws in a bit more fluid then it should and I usually end up having to stick the tube back in a suckin up a half quart or so every time I do a flush. When I flushed mine with Syn ATF, I had the same problem and had to drain a bit but looks like im not the only 1 who has to do this.

usually the levels change within a week or two of changing ATF. maybe your mechanic is just taking that into consideration. check your ATF in a week and see where it's at, it might be low.

Make sure the engine is running when you check the ATF level. I made that mistake and thought I was overfilled. Wound up being under when the engine is running.

My thoughts exactly. The car should be running, and you should shift through all the gears ending in P again, then check it.

ATF expands when HOT, the Cold level is to check the initial fill-up, ideal is to check when @ operating temp, with engine running, and in Park. also, NO foaming means no potential damage, under-filling could mean problems under extreme cornering, as we all do, causing it to suck air ...
