Has anyone had on their 2000 max. a sudden drop in idle and near stall when shifting into D or R after a cold start?

If so, did they take it to the dealer and did they change any part?

I have the problem which only started with the winter and I noticed there is a TSB on it listed at the NHTSA site: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Would like to get some input from others with the problem before I go to the dealer and hear "Its normal sir, it was designed to do that!"

I think the idle speed dropping a bit when doing that is normal. But, not to the point where the engine stalls out. Usually on a cold start, the engine idles above 1000 rpm. After shifting into gear, it drops, but never to the point where it will stall.

I have it too. I would assume its the tranny going from park to in gear. I don't think its a mechanical problem.

Same problem

I live near Chicago and I have had the exact same problem. The problem seems to occur when I use anything but Mobil Premium gas (octane rating @93). It even happened when I used Amoco Premium. I'm not a mechanic and I can't technically explain why Mobil Premium helps. So long as the problem does not re-occur, I am avoiding a trip to the dealer. I sure wish the price of gas would drop though.. Good luck and reply back if you find that using a certain gasoline solves your problem.

Drop in idle cold start

Theres a recall for this problem in Canada, at least.
The fix is to reprogram the Engine Computer, takes about an hour.

Has anyone been able to find a TSB on this in the States? If this is one more thing to get fixed under warranty, why not. I'm gonna make this car cost them.

check out: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/problems/tsb/Servicemmy5.cfm

I found two service bulletins summarizing the problem.

Service Bulletin Number: NTB00008 and NTB00008A

Since my problem disappeared when I began using better gasoline, would anyone still recommend asking the dealer to mess with the car? I'd be afraid that after the dealer fixed the so called problem, a series of other problems would crop up... some experiences posted here have made me a bit skeptical.

As a follow up, - when the dealer reprogrammed the computer to stop the stall at cold idle it fixed the stall problem, but I have an intermittent engine knock since then. The cars been in the shop 3 times, - dealer says owners manual says some knock is normal (it does, and its plain wrong as far as Im concerned). I have asked for the car to be reporgrammed back to where it was, but they say thats impossible, the computer wont allow it.
It doesnt matter which gas brand I use by the way, it happens with premium gas ffrom anybody.
Im taking the car in today for another attempt to fix the knocking. Anyone else ever have this problem, it always happens around 2500 RPM, 0 snd if the dealer fixed it, what did they do?

I already have knocking at around ~2500 rpm so what the hell. I'm taking the car in today for bumper scratches, TCM TSB, clicking a/c fan and the cold idle drop. We'll see what happens.

idle

I will be taking my 2000 I30 in this friday to fix the idle drop no cold starts. I usually don't bother, but this drop is severe each morning and causes a near stall each time. Will post follow-up for others considering the fix

Re: Drop in idle cold start

Hello. Do you have more information on this recall (i.e., full text, the text on your work order, etc.)? I've had my TCM and Trunk Clips done already, but not this. Are you in Eastern or Western Canada? Thanks.

Cold Start

I'm in Chicago and I just got back from the dealer. They reprogrammed the ECU, no questions. I just left it at the dealer overnight, they gave me a demo for the next day and were d finished with it by noon (they were busy in the am)
I mentioned the TCM TSB and had the new TCM.
If you have a problem with your dealer, Woodfield Nissan in Hoffman Estates is where I went. I usually wouldn't trust dealers, but I had no problems.
