resetting the ECU vs. Resetting the CEL
resetting the ECU vs. Resetting the CEL
I would like to reset my ECU. I am not sure about the procedure. Is recetting the ECU the same as resetting the CEL? Doing the turn clockwise than counter clockwise and then repeat? or to reset the ECU to havea a fresh start to relearn so to speak, is there soemthing else involved.
Thanks
Thanks

Per the Haynes Manual, chapter 6.
The reset screw as we know it only clears the error codes stored in the ECU, it does not reset anything.
Right from the book, chapter 6 page 5:
"CAUTION: Do not disconnect the battery from the vehicle to clear the codes. This will erase stored operating parameters from the memory and cause the engine to run rough for a period of time while the computer relearns the information."
Our ECU's are constantly reading the sensors and making adjustments (learning) as we drive. There is no need to erase operational parameters. If you change something, it learns it. Why make it learn everything all over? It probably sees and learns a simple mod a lot faster then learning everything all over again.
