The true "dry" weight of the GXE, SE, and GLE

While scanning NADA.com today, I noticed something interesting. The listed weights of the 96 GXE, SE, and GLE seemed pretty light. I made a call to NADA just to see if anyone knew how the weights were determined for the cars. I really didn't expect a good answer, but I got one. NADA said that they use the manufactuers listed dry weight which means no gas, oil, or coolant. The weight of each model typically shows the lowest priced verison of that model so if it was a GXE, it would be a 5 speed with the least options, a 5 speed SE with most minimal options, etc.

Here are the weights:

GXE: 2886
SE: 2895
GLE: 2982

As we can see, the barebones GXE weighs a whopping 9lbs less than the barebones SE. The standard heavily optioned GLE (leather, power seat, moonroof, auto, climate control) weighs in only 94lbs heavier than the base 5 speed GXE.

I'd say this is a definative answer and we can get a pretty good idea of how much options like moonroofs, power seats, and autos actually weigh (~40-50lbs).

I'd like to point out the auto isn't as heavy as everyone makes it out to be. Granted the auto contains more fluid than a 5 speed, the difference in weight between the fluid-filled trannies is only around 30lbs judging from the GLE's dry weight.

Off the top of my head, I believe that weight accounts for passengers and luggage to get a gross vehicle weight.

Maybe he's implying that the scale or measurement was wrong? Unless you took stuff out of your car, or its a freak, it really can't be that much less than its dry weight.

I've heard that the max se 95 (my model) weighs in at about 3055 but i have all the options except the heated seats. Just a funny tid bit i've heard but, the next Mitsu Evo VIII weighs in at 4222 when i read that i died laughing, that thing is no bigger than a civic and it weights 1k more than our cars. That pretty much makes up for the 100 extra hp is has on our cars. It would probably be a fair race. I know i whipped a 3000GT or 2 cause they weigh as much as small suv's.

Lol to the comment likening it to a bloated civic. But it being a fair race vs a 4th gen; I don't know about all that.

Actually, the Evo VIII wheighs no where near 4222 lbs. A 2003 Evo VIII with AWD and no sunroof weighs 3263 lbs. Oh and a stock one sprints to 60mph in around five seconds so unless your max is pumpin atleast 300hp i wouldn't wager against the Evo. I do belive what you say about the 3000gt being heavy. Although the turbo AWD version would clearly spank a max in a flat out race.

Just had to say that.

lol, EVOs do NOT weigh anywhere NEAR 4000lbs. Dont believe everything you read in magazines either. Some mags report the evo only doing 14.2 in the 1/4. Thats probably a good .4 tenths off. Also, maybe you beat a 3000GT N/A tonygotskillz, but NOT a 3000GT TT.

SCC is in no position to say anything "sucks" at drag racing, since they themselves can't drag race for ****.

It being a missprint must be right, cause 4222 didn't sound right, especially with the performance numbers they were talking about. I read it in super streets march issue. Oh well wouldn't be the first time super street was wrong.

If I remember correctly, those are the weights listed for 1995-1999 Maximas. The 1997-1999s weight 30XX lbs. Somebody check their insurance card.
