Overhaul 5sp tranny price?

Im going to have my 5sp overhauled- new seals, bearings, shims, cleaned out and all but I was wondering what would the cost be for a good job? what would the dealer charge? I would do this myself but I dont have experience in shimming and I dont have the tools like a dial indicator so I guess Ill have a shop do it but I just want to know what would I expect to pay. thanks

EDIT- the tranny is already off the car BTW

You need to talk directly with JAY25. He will help you out where he can. He even has a FULL write-up for the entire process. If you were to take it to the dealer, it will be well over $1000. If you took it to a tranny shop or independent garage, it will be around $800, however some/most shops will not touch the internals of the tranny. This is something that you can do in a day or two, with little to no effort involved since the tranny is already off the car.....

Ive read the write up and also from motorvate one but I did go to the dealer once and the service manager gave me a estimated $500 or so but he didnt give me a clear price since he doesnt know how much labor would be.

How deep ya want to go? Diff bearings are easy, thats all I did, Jamie as well. Eric did some other bearings. If you want to do it all were talking syncro rings and a few other bearings. You will need a hydraulic press. My advice is just do all the bearings unless the syncros look worn. I'd imagine a shop could do it for under 1k, but for that money just buy a used low milage trans, run cheep gear oil for 1k then put redline MT 90 in and be happy.

well mine is pretty much a used low milage tranny- 97 with 49k. whats the odds of me having bad diff bearings? I havent opened it up yet but I know for shure the seals need to be changed

talk to Harold... HLH (the 5speed conversion guy) He bought a 1st gen altima one, took some of the gears out (3rd and 5th i think) took his 1,2,4 and sent them all to Washington, DC and for 60$ or something and got them hardened... Then made a new tranny w/ those gears to support his turbo... I think the whole deal only cost $800 area. (that include the altima tranny)
