Trouble acceleration!

Hi all,

I have a 96 SE that runs good most of the time. However, sometimes I am having trouble accelerating especially merging onto highways. It seems the rpm wouldn't go over 2200 and it would take forever to go above 55 mph. (even if I press the gas pedal all the way down to the floor). If I leave the OD off the problem is fixed. What do you think is wrong with my SE?

TIA!

Dave
