Don't Turn Corner Bulbs Around For Brighter Lights

A few weeks ago someone on this list gave instructions to cut off one of the pins on the corner lamps and install 180 degrees from normal position to make the corners brighter. This, seeming much simpler (and easily reversed) than the re-wire option, made me give it a try. Yes the bulbs are brighter, but after a couple of weeks the chrome reflective surface has turned all black. The corner lamps looked smoked. I pulled them back out and it appears that quite a bit of heat was generated. I have changed them back to the stock configuration. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you have the same problem if you rewire them? They are really dull due to the fact the reflectors are now shot!

I did the rewire instead of cutting the nub off the bulb. It has been a year and still no problems.

Did it over 1.5 years ago with no probs at all.

Maybe it is your bulb. Lots of .org members have this simple Mod and your problem is the first time I heard of it.

I'm in between on this one. I've had this setup for very long, and by all means my reflector housing hasn't turned black. But, there is a tiny hole which is black but is not visible unless looked for very carefully through the plastic housing.

So like the others, I have also had no problems, but I still worry sometimes.

If you are worried about heat, I would do a search on google for some white 1157 LEDs, they should be brighter and give off nearly no heat. I currently have Polarg 1157s installed with the nub sanded off but as soon as I get some extra cash im going to try LEDs. The downside is they cost like 20$ each, but then again they pretty much last forever. (100,000 hour warranty or something like that)

I did the nub thing and no problems yet. Did you paint your bulbs? Had you handled them a lot with your hands? The oil in your skin or something on your hands might have burned off. You might also have some type of leak or something in the housing. Has your car been wrecked? If it has aftermarket (not nissan) corners, the insides might have gone bad somehow? What brand bulbs are you using?

Just a few things to think about.

its to make use of both filliments in the bulb rather than just lighting up one of them. www.maximadriver.com has instruction for it

btw I have mine almost 2 years with no problems yet using both stock and polarg bulbs

Just a few things to think about.

The bulbs were not painted. I handled them when I removed & replaced them, but I think that's only an issue with halogen bulbs, correct?
The car has not been wrecked, corners are factory Nissan and show no signs of leaking. I don't know if the bulbs have ever been replaced (2nd owner) but they are just standard 1157 bulbs. Both sides are bad with the drivers side slightly darker than the passenger side. I noticed it when walking towards the car a few days ago. They look like the lenses are smoked. Upon taking it apart, I can see that the chrome reflective surface is almost entirely black now. Looks like a heat problem. Anyone have a couple of factory corners laying around they want to get rid of?

What Year is your maxima? I have been on this forum less then a month and here and there I hear stuff from other people. and some informations don't apply for my 99 maxima. it could be that they changed something in wireing of the corner lights on your year maxima. other people are talking about doing it. and have NP but it could be not true for you.
Example i have heard from 3 different people that you could change the lights for power window on 99 maxima and need to get the radio shack one 5 v bulb 25000mvz something like that and change them. but 99 maxima you can't do it. i recommend you get xenon bulb for the corner lights. thats what i have on mine.

Ahh, his profile says he has a 1992 SE, maybe that is why this happened. I thought this mod was only intended for 4th gens anyway.
