Best wheels & tires?

I'm planning on setting a goal to have new wheels and tires on my Max by late-April to mid-May (not sure yet).

For the wheels, the choices are:

- Borbet Type E 17x8's $169 ea ($676 for 4) at Tirerack.com.
- 2000-2003 Nissan Maxima SE wheels (the 17's). Pricing somewhat unavailable, but I expect anywhere from $480-600.
- MAS Presidents (pictures avaible here: http://daviddenmark.com/mas.presidents/). The 18's look good, but 17's are cheaper on tires. Not sure about the price on these rims, yet.

For the tires, the choices are:

- Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position $162 ($648)
- Pirelli Pzero Nero $140 ($560)
- Yokohama AVS Sport $137 ($548)
- Continental ContiSport Contact $113 ($452)
- Yokohama AVS ES100 $107 ($428)

All tires are 225/45-17.

If anybody can offer any sort of information (better prices, what they think would be better rims and/or tires) is welcome to do so. Total cost for the mod would be around the $1,200 figure.

Proper 17" size is either 225-50 or 235-45 or even 245-45. 225-45-17 is too small.

I have 17x8" w/ tires for sale. Way cheaper, right width, right offset and probably lighter than some of you choices.

They are not "perfect" though. Usual curb checks

Peep out Victoria Tire and Wheel on the web(not sure of the address)...18"s in a similar style will run about $125-150 per rim. Tire Rack has Z-Rated 225/35/18 tires for as low $80 each...just a thought...

If you are getting 17x7" then 225/45/17 is fine (thats what i have). But yeah 17x8" you will need wider tires than 225! Also did you look into the Kumho Ecsta 712? I have those (225/45/17) and they were only $400 for all 4 and i love then, they look good and handle great on wet roads. Just a thought, good luck.

225-45-17 will make the speedo 2% too fast. 235-45 will make the speedo read 0.6% too fast. 245-45-17 will make the speedo read 0.7% too slow. 225-50-17 will make the speedo read 1.4% too slow.

You have the wrong sized tires.

Just because the tires work doesn't mean they are the proper tire size. You could run 215-45-17s and say you have no problems. But that doesn't make it the correct size. The best you could say about the 225-45-17s is that it's not that bad or it's not that off.

Fun tool that I'm sure Jeff92se was using to calculate this.

i always thought 225/45/17 were the closest you could get to stock size

but Jeff, the nice thing is you can make a little extra tq when the tire is slightly smaller!! Or, getting the slightly larger will save a little gas on hwy travel.

I prefer the earlier

I bet with carefull tire sizing, you could get the stock speedo to read even more accurately but would take some doing.

Yeah running a smaller size would help in the drag races but I can smoke my tires pretty easy anyway. I'd would much rather have an accurate speedo and odometer.

Or you can get a set of 205/40/17 tires because they are a great buy. I knew a kid with SP9000s that did that it did not bother him
