noise in engine on acceleration and deacceleration

People,

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima and there is a noise when I accelerate and when I deaccelerate.....the dealership is telling me it is the timing belt chain and not the pulley or any belt....but it doesn't sound like a chain sound.....they thought it was the alternator or the pulley at first...but now it's not....trying to hear what anybody has to say on it...they are trying to charge me $800 for labor just to open it....just for labor.....help me out fellow Maxima owners.

Thanks

yeah....everyone was saying alternator.....but they told me it wasn't and that it was the belts and the pulley.....then they told me it wasn't that and it was inside the engine....and they have to open it up.....seems to fishy to me.....and the whistle sound does not sound like a chain.....

Have you ever had this same problem? Or you know someone who had this problem?

I don't really know anything specific about this so someone
else will have to fill in the specifics, but there is a Technical
Service Bulletin about the Timing belt chain issue that some
Max's get. If that is the problem, and you can get more info on this, you may be able to get out of this cheap.

Good luck.

same noise here...

only happens when the engine is cold , after it warms up the noise is gone, the noise itself its hard to explain, it does sound like a metal chain rubbing agains metal.
i hope that's something else than Timing chain and its tensioners
but it looks like i'm in stage one of the problem

Technical Service Bulletin?

Hey J.,

Where do I find out about that? And are you saying that there was a problem with the chain on the Maximas in which they would have to fix it for me without charge?
