my friend and i just replaced the starter on my mom's 95SE automatic. the thing still didn't start and it seems like the solenoid won't even light when i turn the key to start the motor. what we did next was bypass everything and ran a wire straight to the terminal on the starter motor. what do you know, it cranks, but the car still won't start. this could be due to no fuel delivery. however, my first concern is getting the power to the solenoid with the turnkey. i suspect either the stock security system has malfunctioned or the shift safety mechanism (auto) is sensing the car is still in gear and won't allow the starter to be cranked with the turnkey. can someone help me in terms of using a tester? it's a maze of wires and hoses under the hood. it's driving me nuts. i'll try a few more times to diagnose before i call AAA to tow this piece to nissan. one other thing i noticed, the alarm would not sound off once the battery was reconnected. shouldn't it be alarming the moment the terminals are reconnected? just a thought.

 

Did you connect all your harnesses back right?

 

When I reconnected my battery after the alternator change, the alarm didnt sound?

 

Did you try pull any code?

 

everything was reconnected. no codes. i need help with testing the electricals (transmission safety interlock, security system ignition kill).

To check the Park./neutral switchcircuit according to the '99 FSM, test voltage between terminal 27 on the ECM connector and ground with the ignition switch on. In park or neutral, you should read approx. 0 volts, in any other postition you should read approx. 5 volts.

 

So did you try to turn your key to the on position,and ran a wire straight to the terminal on the starter motor to see if it will start?Or have you try to start it with the shifter in neutral?You can also try to remove one of the coil and put a screw driver or spark plug in it to see if you are getting spark or not?

 

bypassed the system like i said earlier and the starter is functional. the engine will not start though. i've also tried the neutral and park positions. unless it's bypassed, the solenoid won't even light up. i have to worry about the starter first before i worry about any other system in the car. something about the wiring in between the starter switch and the starter is at fault. any other ideas? i need to hear from someone who is experienced in testing the various circuits, fuses, etc. thanks.

 

Are you getting juice to the solenoid? Do you hear it click when you try to crank it over? Put a voltmeter on the solenoid terminals and see if you're getting power. If not, follow the wires back and make sure the harness clip is clicked in all the way. I haven't done this for a while but I think I recall the clip being just in front of the solenoid top. Recheck that you didn't crosswire the solenoid somehow as well. If it's clicked in all the way then test the leads in the clip. If you're not getting power there, move further back up the system. Check your ground wires and positive leads for corrosion.

Did you have the negative cable disconnected when installing the starter?

 

According to the '99 FSM, the ignition switch circuit has it's own 10A fuse in the fuse box. It's circuit #13. I suggest that you check that first.

You can also check the PNP switch at the electrical connector next to the starter. The connector on my '95 is gray and is mounted to the A/T between the starter solenoid and the left motor mount and has seven wires. Check for voltage from terminal 3 to ground. You should get 12V with the ignition switch on. The terminals are:
