Some of my dyno comparison charts have come under heavy fire at VTEC.net by the big kuhunas themselves (Jeff and Shawn - notyper). After being blasted in Round 1 for the past two weeks, I finally returned fire in Round 2 yesterday (don't frequent that site much, so never saw it until just yesterday, lol), and now I have some updated charts for Round 3 today.

Cliff Notes: They claim that my previous dyno comparisons of these three engines are inaccurate and worthless (blatantly misleading, etc etc) because they are corrected back to crank among other things. I acknowledge that they are not the most accurate things out there and update the charts with some more recent and much more accurate data that I have come across and it still shows the same overall picture. That's where it stands as of now. They are digesting the new data I guess. :-)

Hondas are slow, we all know that. I would say that you can hook up two hondas to one maxima and maxima could pull the hondas down the track.

That's one long a$$ed thread. I printed it all out so I can digest it fully. From a quick glance, it looks like DoubleOSmith is a cool objective guy who loves Hondas. Jeff and NoTyper, on the other hand, seem to be so brainwashed on VTEC, they need to be slapped by a VQ a couple of times just to bring 'em back down to reality. Sheesh, the writing's on the wall, and it ain't spelt VTEC.

Tell them to either accept the charts "as-is" or make their own. I bet if the chart was "inaccurate" in their favor, they wouldn't be nearly as cry-babyish.

Tell them to check out our 1/4 mile section, taking a hard look at the NA 5 speeds.

I normally have mine set to "smaller", but that's ridiculously tiny on their site so I have to set it back up to medium.

 

If I am reading all this correctly, the Toyota V6 seems to outperform both Nissan and Honda. I also remember reading in the past that Toyotas engine had improved performance if a higher octane (say 91+) was used. This is in addition to the Camry already having 4 more HP and 4 more LBs of torque (194/209 stock vs 190/205). Now, stock for stock, auto to auto, is a 1997 Camry LE V6 actually faster than a 97 Maxima in almost all respects? Edmunds gives the weight for the LE V6 to be 3219 LBs vs 3097 LBs for the Maxima. Yet even Edmunds gives the 0-60 for the Camry 8.3 while the Max is 7.9 seconds. What is missing? Does this all come down to the gearing of the automatic transmissions? Or is the Camry actually faster, especially if the cars were using equivalently rated gas? thanks for your thoughts...

 

The Camry engine is more powerful overall than the VQ30DE thanks to higher compression and a variable intake manifold, and yes it does seem to make more than rated when upping the octane to premium. But the weight of a Camry LE V6 5spd was about 3200lb vs roughly 3000lb for an equivalent Maxima. So the extra weight cancels out the extra power. Gearing, both manual and automatic, are nearly identical between the cars. Almost a direct copy.


In the end the two cars are nearly dead even, but even the Camry guys that I've spoken to seem to agree that the Maxima is just a hair faster due to its lighter weight. But we are talking about less than a tenth of a second which makes it completely a driver's race. I have simulated this in CarTest with dynos and it really is that close. There is more modding potential with the Maxima, but with Toyota you can also get the TRD Supercharger with a full factory warranty.

 

That toyota's got some low end powere there.

 

I know that's an option, but I didn't want to screw with my settings since I do web designs on that computer.

I remember a while back, while looking at some magazine, I saw a supercharged Accord v6. Guess what it ran in the 1/4? Like 14.9 or 14.8 Nothing a maxima with a couple of NA bolt-ons will not do.

the numbers on the camry are pretty impressive, is that the same motor that they use in the current camry?

 

actualy according to autosite.com, the stock 2002 accord v6 can do 14.98.........so it must be some POS supercharger they got there
