Question for people with the 6spd. transmission

When I drive my 97 auto it shifts roughly at 3000 R.P.M and I maintain 70-75mph at just under 2500 R.P.M. I was comparing it with my 2k2 manual that I just purchased, and with the 2k2 after going thru the gear shifts my R.P.M are at almost 3500 to mantain the same speed. Is this normal? or in your opinion do I have the M.A.F
problem with my car and therefore lossing some power?
Any ideas?

That is what I thought at first, that some how I shifted to the wrong gear and did not hear the engine rev. up cause I had the stereo
cranked up, but no, I checked and I was in 6th. gear.

I agree with jeepik. I get the same rpms as he does in my 2k2 6spd.

6th gear @ 60MPH = 2000RPM
6th gear @ 80MPH = 2500RPM
6th gear @ 90MPH = 3000RPM

Thank you for your feedback guys. I'm going to pay close attention next time I drive on the freeway. Is the loss of power a symptom of a bad M.A.F?

I think a MAF failure would not allow you to get over 2500 rpms, or something like that. Are you able to redline the car right now in any gear? If you are, then your MAF should be fine.

So you're saying that you're cruising at 3500 rpms at 70-75 mph? Is your e-brake completely disconnected? Are you ABSOLUTELY positive your shifter is in the right gate (ie. 6th)?

If everything checks out, take it to the dealership. You should still be under warranty.

I checked everything you mentioned. I was in 6th. no e-brake.It just happened last night and hve not driven the car today, so hopefully it is a fluke, but if not I will have to have the dealer chek it out for me.Car has only 400 miles, so warranty is not an issue

You couldn't have been in 6th unless your clutch was spinning. It has to do with engine speed and transmission speed....

Exactly, so if you step on the gas and then back off does the car jerk, or does it seem to slip?

Huh???? The gear ratios on your old

automatic are completely different from the gear ratios on the new manual; the first four gears on the manual box are MUCH SHORTER (higher numerically) than the first three gears in your old slushbox, this is why the RPMs need to be much higher to maintain same vehicle speed in your new car.

This is really basic stuff here...

The speedo reads transmission rotations, the tach reads engine rotations. In a stick shift there is no elastic connection between the engine and transmission (no torque converter) - they are mechanically connected by the clutch. The relation between the two is fixed in each gear. The only way you can get higher rpm at any MPH is either you're in the wrong gear, the clutch is slipping (it would smell by now), the tach is way off or the speedo is way off.

I got a 2003 six speed also. Getting the same rpms as the other posters.

When you shift into 6th, you have to first firmly push the stick to all the way to the right, then pull back.

there is absolutely no way for you to get the high rpm you reported unless you were in 4th.
