Probably 5 or 6 more analysis results since the update in March.

Also, a change of what analysis companies I recommend and why. Specifically, a note of Amsoil seperating themselves from Oil Analyzers, Inc., which is now Oil Analysis Lab, Inc. and my top pick for where to get your oil analyzed.

And the beginning of an oil filter analysis comparison for Maxima-specific applications. It is in the *early* stages, so not a whole lot of info is available.

You guys using the 15208-65F00 Nissan OEM filter on your VQ35s might as well go buy a Fram and save yourself some money, since they are made virtually the same way: cheap.

Enjoy!

this has to be a joke (the nissan oem filter) for the VQ35! I recently changed my oil (first time alone ) and people recommended the oem filter! ahhh c'mon...you should've had this thread a week earlier!

Oh well, so what brands do you prefer since you're the oil god

Nissan makes two OEM filters for the VQ:

15208-9E000
15208-65F00

They switched to specifying the 65F00 in late 2001 right before the 2k2 VQ35s started production. You can still buy the 9E000, as it's better from simply a construction standpoint. It fits all VQ apps just fine.

My guess is Nissan will be discontinuing the 9E000 OEM filter at some point in the future to save on production costs.

I personally prefer Amsoil Series 2000 0W/30, or Amsoil xW/30.

I also don't hesitate recommending Mobil 1 SuperSyn and conventional Castrol GTX oils.

Except you, since it has increased membership here.

I'm still waiting on my commission check for that BTW.

ohh i have to check the receipt to see which one I bought. I will do that when I get home (in Canada right now)

Also, I just switched to Mobil1 Supersyn 5w30 and I don't know if it's just in my head but it feels like the gears change smoother and also it idles lower. Is this in my head only?!

One more thing, which oil filter do you use?

The honest answer: who knows. You're not alone, as many report a similar experience.

Currently: the STP S6941, and oversized applicaton for the VQ engines. It's $7 and only available at AutoZones.....that is subject to change.

Thanks Bill.

I'll have another utopia VE and Big Purple Monster analysis for you the next go-round. I'm only sending them in every other time now.

No Kidding. The filter that came on my car was the 15208-9E000

I went back to the dealership for my first oil change and they gave me a 15208-65F00. I was like WTF this is for a sentra or other 2.0 liter car. It was a little bigger than HALF the size of my original filter. The guy at the dealership swore up and down that it was what was specified for my car. I was like 'WTF? hell no i'm not putting that dinky little thing on my 3.5.' It even said on the box the applications were for the SR20DE, GA16DE, KA24DE. I requested the filter for the 99-2000 maximas and he gave me the bigger one that matched my original filter part no.

Thanks for the work bill.

Looks good Bill. I would like to see a "Bill's Editorial section" either in the thread or in the spreadsheet. I understand the lab data to an extent, but even with comments from Blackstone and Dyson I only have a vague understanding overall. Since you're in charge I think people would be interested to see what you have to say about brands, filters, etc. As long as it's an opinion section I'm sure the conspiracy theorists will cut you some slack.

There's likely more Lemmings than thinkers around these parts anyway

what is the best conventional oil and filter to use?
I've been using Mobil Drive clean 5w-30 for a while now.
Are the Supertech oil filters from walmart good?

Accurate answer: it depends

Speculative answer: I would begin at 5k and go from there; filters would need to be replaced at half your extended interval; I personally wouldn't try over 10k, unless you put 25k+ on it in a year.

I wouldn't use a Fram filter period. The OEM filter might make it to 7k with mostly longer trips, but Bill's recommendation of changing the filter halfway through is a sound one. Proper filtration is just as important as the oil itself and is a large factor in safe drain intervals.

Bill,
Thanks for all the hard work on the spreadsheet, it's really taken on a life of it's own. I should have an interesting analysis for you in the next few weeks as well.

You didn't answer my question as to where your analysis results are. I have no record of ever getting anything from you to integrate in.

Look in the spreadsheet for my first analysis for ballpark numbers. I believe I either ran 5 or 6k without a filter change using Mobil 1.

Ari,

This must be a Microsoft Works thing, as I'm unaware of anyone else having this issue.

My only affiliation with Blackstone is fattening their wallets via my recommendation of using their services. Other than that, I'm nothing but pigeon fodder to them.....

If you can dig that up and e-mail me a scan of it that would be great.

What programs do you use to open it with? Either that or someone needs to un-encript the data.

Microsoft Excel 2002 (XP)

Also, Excel 97 and Excel 2000 should open it up with no issues.

The only aspects password protected are the cells so that others can't change the data and/or re-publish (AKA protect my data and others so that it is not misrepresented).
