Wow...my dealer rocks!! (long)
Long story short(er): Took my 2k3 in for the hesitation TSB, in the hopes it would fix the throttle lag. My service adviser (I've only ever dealt with one guy) took it no questions asked, and they flashed the ECU. It seemed to fix the problem for a while, but last week (possibly because I was thinking about it after the thread resurfaced) the lag seemed as bad as ever. So I chalked it up to an unusual transmission setup (still think this is the case); until I talked to realtor and Virus, who said the flash fixed their throttle lag completely.
At this point, I'm thinking "Did they mess up the flash? Did they even DO the flash?"
This morning took it back to the dealer, and explained the problem and my concerns. Once again he took the car with no problem, showed me the report from their tool that said the flash had been successful, but said they'd either try it again or try something else.
About an hour later, I get a call. It's the tech working on my car, and the service manager. They explained that once the ECU is flashed, the SW version number is also updated, and their tool reports that all SW is up-to-date (no flash possible). But, they wanted to fix the problem, so asked me to walk them through the symptoms so they completely understood them. After listening carefully, they said they'd run diagnostics, and also suggested some possible solutions.
Result? I pick up my car with the ECU memory cleared, and the service manager's advice to "drive it aggressively so it learns your habits" (guess he saw the FSTB
). And, "to help responsiveness and give it a little more performance", they advanced the timing - without me even asking! My car now SNAPS off the line, and the dealer has my business for some time to come. It's Baker-Jackson (NW) in Houston, in case any of my local boys are looking for a good dealer.

Sorry but I have two dumb questions. What do you mean by SW and what's your timing now? Thx

They said they only advanced it one degree, which is pretty mild. So it's now at 16 degrees BTDC vs. the stock 15.
And thanks, BTW - you're the one who motivated me to go back to the dealer
Oxidizer2k - they told me the ECU "learns" in two power cycles and/or 50 miles (didn't sound like they were sure). So basically I'm planning to DRIVE REALLY FAST for the next 100 miles or so.
Seriously, I plan to go WOT in various gears at different speeds, and take it up to redline in at least one gear each time. Hopefully that way it's getting the right mix of max throttle in various scenarios. If anyone has any different advice, I'd love to hear it.

SW = software. As I understand it, flashing the ECU is the same thing as flashing the ROM in a computer, so you're changing the firmware (or software).

In regards to the ECU "learning" your driving patterns, would unplugging the battery for an hour to reset the ECU be enough to start this process again? I'm just breaking in the new engine, so I don't want to go too hard on it yet, but once I get past 1,000 miles I'd like to do this over again following the tip to drive it aggressively so it learns that way. Thanks for any help.
