Advance the timing? What does that mean?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but can anyone
explain what "advancing the timing" on your car does
and how it is done?

I woulda searched for the answer, but...

Thanks!

I myself am not too bright in this area too. But if memeory serves me right our timing is at 15 degrees. I have a 2k max and was going to go to the dealer this thursday and advance it. I was told not to go above 3 degrees and do it around 17 degrees. is this right at all. Basically I need to know where to advance my timing to. The best place. I only use 93 octane gas.
