Hard to get into gear and stiff clutch.. any manual tranny gurus?

The problem has been intermittent for a while. It would pop into gear easily, then the next time you shift it would be real notchy. However, it seems to be getting worse with time. Particularly hard to get into 1st and 2nd gears.. and 3rd feels like I'm hitting something or forcing it through something. Yes, I put the clutch all the way to the floor when shifting. I changed the MTF to Redline and bled the clutch fluid. I greased the slave cylinder and the ball in the shifter. I attempted to remove the shield under the car to see what the hell is going on, but I could not reach 2 bolts. However, when moving the linkage that goes to the tranny from under the car, it feels kind of notchy as well... I'm just not certain where the problem lies, in the shifter assembly itself? (which is very simple from what I can tell, what can go wrong?) or within the tranmission

Anyone have any ideas? Can the clutch have any relation to this? Mine is extremely stiff, feels worse than an ACT but it's OEM.. It's quite old, but never slips? I feel as if I'm doing damage by forcing it into gear, downshifting is especially bad, no matter how well you rev match it, sometimes you just can't put the shifter in.

sorry about posting this here, I thought I could lure in my feedback in the general forum.
any help is greatly appreciated

-slave cylinder
-master cylinder
-pressure plate is very worn, one of the springs popped out..
-syncros
-TO bearing..

Hey,

I'm having the same problem and I suspect that it's our clutch that's going out. I also have have a very stiff pedal and my release point is very high. I getting ready to change my clutch for another, more than likely an oem one. What's causing the stiff pedal and tough to get into gears is the worn out throw-out bearing.

Peace.

The problem may simply be low clutch master cylinder fluid level. Check that first. If the level is good but you have had to maintain that level due to the level dropping, then you likley have the very common leaking clutch fluid line. This is the ~1.5 foot long line that connects to the slave cylinder on the clutch housing. I know mine leaked quite badly and caused me similar issues to what you are experiencing (hard to get into gear and stiff pedal...pedal groaned sometimes, too). I replaced that line myself but was not able to bleed it completely even after 2+ hours of trying, and ended up taking it to a dealer to bleed.

My best guess would be the master cylinder or throwout bearing. Both of these will cause the stiff pedal. This is where I would start and if the throwout bearing is bad, you should replace the clutch at the same time. Good Luck!

would this be the same as the clutch fluid?
I've bled that recently, saw no difference at all. There are no visible leaks anywhere.

It feels as if something is not releasing or going in completely.. so when i put the clutch in and move the shifter, it feels as if you are rowing gears and don't even have the clutch engaged..

MaxMojo,
I am not sure how to check for a defective slave cylinder? I watched the fork move and such, it reacts well and goes in fully..

I'm curious as to how exactly the shifting problem would be related to the clutch? only one i can think of is the clutch is not fully depressed even when I put it to the floor.. just too worn. However, what's interesting is that it never slips.

a worn out clutch friction disc will also cause you to have a stiff pedal since its making the pressure plate fingers travel at a greater distance in order for it to clamp and un clamp

I see,

but how would my shifter notchiness relate to that? Or can it be a seperate problem?

Mine did that right before the gears started messing up. Do you have a STS?

Sounds to me like the pressure plate could be going out.
