Plant the throttle, or quickly tip in-which is better for acceleration?

I've found sometimes that if I just stomp on the throttle, the car seems to bog down for a very short period, but if I give it part throttle for a very short time, then step on it, it seems like the car accelerates faster. Is this normal? Is my mind playing tricks on me again?

When you plant it down, the car needs to gather air to mix with the amount of gas that you just feed it.. So it takes a few seconds.

Professional drivers get better results using a smooth acceleration motion with the foot. Something along the lines of when planting your foot (not instantly but very fast) gas gets poured out of the injectors at max speed but the air needs time to acclerate to to full throttle speed or something.... I'm sure if you do a search on the net you can find something with some proper theory behind it You'll notice from a rolling start you'll get better acclereration by smoothly acclerating than tromping the gas...

This initial "bog" when stomping on the gas is sometimes called cylinder soaking. Caused by fuel being dumped in the cylinder before enough air can reach it, thereby causing a very rich mixture for a very short time. This is what I was taught in a police pursuit course. Someone else may have a better understanding of it.
