i have a maxima 2000. i'm trying to find the bad ones so i can replace it. i do not have the money the replace all. so, how should i find the bad ones? should i check it with an ohmmeter? is there any other ways? when i brought it the dealership, they said one on the 5th cylinder is definitely bad. but which one is considered as the 5th cylinder?
another thing, i heard someone was selling the coils for $50 a piece. can someone give the info on that?

I wasted ALOT of time by doing the ohmmeter coil and wiring checks on my Dad's 99 GLE as per the service manual. Since the coils were acting up intermittently, the ohmeter check said they were all okay --which wasn't the case since I had to replace 2 of them.

So I went out and bought a code reader tool (Innova Equus 3100) which made it a whole lot easier to check the SES codes. The funny thing I experienced with getting bad coil codes was that I had to use the scan tool as soon as the MIL light came on. I don't know why but the code would clear after starting the car a few times.

Anyway, the 5th cylinder is the rear one on the driver's side.

I had the exact same problem...i went to autozone and the odb scanner said cylinder #5 misfiring. Since i had an extended warranty i had the dealer check it out. They said since the #5 was bad it threw off the rest so they ended up changing out all six ignition coils. Not sure if this was neccessary or not but thats what they did. I believe the #5 is the the back row middle coil. Here is a link to a spark plug change that tell you which one is which. Coil Location

 

The front row of cylinders is 2 - 4 - 6 (going from passenger side to driver side)

The rear row is 1 - 3 - 5 (going from passenger side to driver side)

Look at your owners manual (Section 9) for this info.

 

THANX guys. just one thing, i did use an OBD II scanner and it did give me an MIL code 1320(ignition misfiring) but it did not tell me which cylinder it was. i just know it's da 5th cylinder bcuz thats what technician at the dealership told me. i should've asked how he found the bad one.

 

wasn't there some guy in this forum selling those coils for $50 a piece? can someone give me the info on that? dealership i went to sell them for $65+tax

what do they mean by left or right coil? i need one on the back . so which one do i buy?

I would call or email them to be sure. They've always responded to my emails within a few hours when they are open. One thing you should ask them is if you are replacing just one coil should you buy the old coils or the updated coils. The old coil part numbers are
224482Y000 and 224482Y005
the updated coil part numbers are
224482Y001 and 22448Y006
I would call to make sure you get the right part.
