Clutch & Flywheel talk: Calling all VE 5sp owners..

Within a month or so, its-a swappin time for me I found a pretty good parts car with 104k that has everything I need. Not sure if its LSD or not I never checked the trans code but even if it didnt have LSD I guess its not a big deal........

Anyway, Id like to do a new clutch and/or flywheel when it goes in. My personal experiences with 2 VE 5sp clutches so far: ACT which seems to shudder the car too much for my comfort right as you let it out but it grips fine otherwise; and the Luk which feels nearly perfect in my book...but im open to more suggestions. What kind of clutches have you guys used and had experience with? Also $ is a factor as im already spending a load of money as it is so far.. Im not looking for anything thats extreme and suited for heavily modded cars, just a decent one that feels smooth yet with a good grip.

Flywheel.. Same situation as the clutch, im open to recommendations and opinions; again not looking for anything too crazy and expensive. If when the 5sp is pulled out of the parts car and it looks like the flywheel isnt THAT bad I guess i could have it resurfaced or something.

Btw.. swap most likely being done at Maximum tuning, I will be talking to jeff again soon on his thoughts.

Thank you all and happy shifting

contact Matt93SE for a flywheel - he has several Fidanza ones which are lightened and you can get a good deal on that
if you want a stock flywheel, let me know and I'll sell you my old one

I have OEM nissan clutch (NOT keyvalue) and am happy with that. I got it from Courtesy - check out their site www.courtesyparts.com for prices

For nothing extreme. Go with whatever Matt used. Luk or something. The exedy might be another choice.

I love my ACT and stock lightened flywheel. Hope I love it when I add the Fidanza to the mix. My ACT never shuttered. It did it ever so slightly when I first put it in but it was always very smooth.

Same thing as Jeffy said. I had no problems with shudder on my ACT, but it was just too harsh engaging and I feel it's a good proponent of my blowing my second tranny to bits. the LuK is soft enough that it allows me to finish shoving it in gear, even while I'm almost out on the clutch (if that makes sense).

also installed a Fidanza last week and it's GREAT! weird thing is that the engine runs smoother than with the lightened factory, accelerates better, AND the clutch engages smoother. don't know how that one happened, but I suffered zero loss of driveability with mine.

FYI, I'm doing a group deal of sorts on them. check the 3rd gen FS forum or the group deals forum.

Just that Maximan drove my car in the break in period and he's not use to it, also when I drive it, it doesn't shudder either its just a harsh engagement like Matt said. He's a novice at driving a 5-speed if he was to drive my car more often he would get a hang of it but he's getting his own 5-speed so that not going to happen.

Joe get the flywheel from Matt, $350.00 shipped you cannot go wrong.

Get the flywheel. I got the $120 Exedy Clutch from eBay and the AASCO flywheel. 25,000 miles later, I'm very pleased. Also get the RedLine tranny fluid

As for clutch all i can say is ACT all the way. Its prob the best streetable clutch out there that you can go to the track and dog too. I don't have a fancy flywheel or anything just a new stock one and the clutch takes abuse well.

His transmission messed up like right afterwards and the transmission shop put in an OEM one for warranty purposes

I guess Kevin would know better than me

I was gonna put it in but just decided what the heck I'll try Exedy

I have the Luk clutch and I really like it, I drove Diego's car I think the same day he got it installed and since Im used to driving stick once around the block and it was fine, wasnt too much chatter or anything, but Im happy with my Luk so I have no reason to switch, btw Joe give me a call tommorow late afternoon, I have some cool news involving xrrcd, a shop, and level 10

I have a centerforce dual friction and am very pleased. Barks second hard every time (after break in of course). It was sort of an emergency install, so I couldn't wait for a lightened flywheel to arrive (although I tried my damndest). I get a little chatter, but I think that is more due to to the crappy azz motor/tranny mounts. I replaced them a year ago with FILLED factory units. Mushy mounts suck! I am going to put Delrin or aluminum in there nest time. That should accompany some boost too, so that will be OK. But the clutch rocks as it is.

Let's see if you say the same thing about that centerforce in another 6 months....

Well, you got that right..time will tell. I was good during the 500 mile break in period (didn't beat on it) so I hope that helps. Anyway, it's in there and there's nothing to do but wait'n'see. Thanks (I think) for the tip.

Nah Centerforce is the one we warned you about. Also break-in goes well with centerforce it's what happens after that.

Clutchmasters seems to be a good brand...

EVERYTHING I've heard about Centerforce says to stay away from it. Why people still buy it I dont know.

My 5spd came with Centerforce and I thought maybe I'd get lucky and not get screwed. Clutch had maybe 40k on it and destroyed itself. I posted up a big thread in the Gen. forum called 'Why you dont get Centerforce' with pictures and everything.

You might wanna see if you can find it
