17 Btdc?

Has there been any drawbacks to advancing the timing yet? It gets over 100 degrees in the summer here, will that cause a problem if I do it? Does the ECU pull timing in the upper rpms?

I think I've experienced a tad bit of pinging, at least I think it was pinging a couple of says ago when it was about 90 degrees. I was getting onto a highway and had already shifted to 5th. I downshifted to 4th to get going a little quicker since traffic was coming up pretty fast behind me when I though I heard a slight ping while accelerating. I'm still not sure it was pinging though so I'm going to watch it more closely - if need be I'll pull back the timing a degree to 16. But other than this the car has perfomed GREAT after advancing it!

Anybody else experinec this after advancing the timing?

Your car seemed plenty fast to me with no pinging the other day!

17 BTDC is what I had mine advanced to a week ago. No pinging, just use premium fuel and dont worry about it. Its not the biggest diff in the world but it just seems to pull alot easier with less effort from the pedal so its better then nothin. On the freeway it makes a big diff on the auto 3.0 were your at apprx 2800rpm when goin 75mph. It picks up soo much easier and it doesnt even downshift, it just gets up and goes with just a touch of the pedal. I kept goin from 75-90 several times earlier tonight with ease and it just stayed in 4th.

Yup. When the air temperature warms up the engine tends to ping a little at low rpm. Having to run 91 octane gasoline doesn't help either, but that's what we're stuck with in California.

So far the pinging hasn't been enough to kick off the knock sensor. So the engine still pulls just fine. (And believe me, I know what the engine feels like when the ECM retards the timing.) But I don't like detonation, so I'm going to try a couple of things. If they don't work, I'll probably have the timing pulled back to 15 degrees BTDC until the Fall when the air temperature cools down. Then I'll advance it again.

Hey Dave - I wish I was as good a driver as you! I've never been able to launch and get it to pull as well as you got it to!

y2kse - it got pretty hot today and no pinging. I've been letting the rpm's go higher before shifting and this seems to have done the trick. But it remains to be seen what happens when it gets to the usual 100+ degrees here in a few weeks.

Thats good to know, just great. Here in AZ its gonna start hittin 110+ in the next month and I just got the timing advanced 2weeks ago. There is no way in hell I can go w/o the A/C here. Looks like its gonna be an interesting summer.
