5 speed tranny flush
how often should i flush/change 5 spd tranny oil.. what oil do i use..everyone is prolly gnnna say redline..so second to redline(its expensive and hard to find) what oil should i use.. thanks..
You should change the tranny fluid every 30k miles, there is no flush for a 5spd, unless you just wanna waste tranny fluid. While a high performance fluid like redline can be recommended, you could just go with a standard GL-4, which is the fluid type specified for the maxima, do NOT use anything else. Hope this helps.
I've heard good things both about Red Line and Amsoil. I've used RL's MTL and the shifting improvement is like night & day! Since you're in Cali, you might be better off with MT-90. I've read people putting in Amsoil 75W90 at a much cheaper price than MT-90. Around here, the price difference can be Amsoil being 50% of Red Line's MT-90 cost.
It's relatively easy to change the fluid yourself. Here are my pics/process for changing tranny fluid.

Just ordered some MT-90 from www.myoilshop.com
Good price. $7 a quart.

A word of warning.. When I tried to drain my 99 5sp by removing that plastic sensor thing, I removed the bolt, placed a screwdriver under the thing to pop it out, and proceeded to instantly snap off the tab where the bolt went through. I quickly glued it back on and put the bolt back in, and then found an alternate (though incorrect) means to drain it (couldn't find the actual drain plug, ended up removing the bolt that holds in the 1-2 shift ball/spring). That ended up not draining all the oil, so I had to suck out the remainder using a mityvac. Talk about learning from experience... I used the Redline MT-90, seems fine...

Sounds like you had yourself some experience!! I just helped a buddy drain the tranny fluid from his 5-spd through the drain bolt. We used a 12mm open ended wrench & it worked great.
Yep, it was fun... But still better than paying someone else to do it. I just could not see anything that looked like a drain bolt, all the bolts looked to me like they held the 2 tranny halves together. Next time I'll find that sucker!

Hope this helps. Once you look under your car next time, things will make more sense.
