What Does Exhaust Drone Sound Like?

My Max has developed some kind of noise at around 2200 RPMs and I cannot pinpoint it. It's only audible when driving; when in P or N the noise is not there. Can this be the drone from the exhaust? What does drone sound like anyways?
Can a stock intake make that kind of noise?

stock 95 GXE
90,000 mi.

if its a deep sound it could be your muffler. do you still have the factory one? check it for holes

Yeah, I still got the factory muffler and did I check it for leaks, but couldn't find any. The noise is not that loud and I think it can be heard more inside the car then outside.

I was not worried when it was just "Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhh..." but when "...eeeeeeeewwwwwwwuuuuuuuuiiii..." got slapped to it, that got my attention.

On a more serious note, I found this in one of the threads here:
http://miata.net/garage/tsb/s004_93.html
It basically says that carbon buildup in the intake and on the valves can cause noise, so I was wondering if anyone has any more info on that or a personal experience to share.

You may be running a little rich, there. That, and you're running on only half your strokes.
