Hit a deer... hood/headlight/radiator screwed

Yeah, heading home from work a deer jumped out from some tall bushes on the side of the road, no time to react. I was probably going 50 when I saw it, I got on the brakes hard but he was only 20 or so feet in front of me so I probably got down to like 35 before I hit it. Took out my drivers side headlight, grille, CF hood, and radiator. The car would be driveable except for the radiator. It's no big deal, I know guys that do body work and I'll get hooked up, but still an inconvenience being as I no longer have an extra car to drive around. Hopefully I can get the radiator fixed tomorrow so that I can at least drive the car.

How does insurance treat hitting a deer (collision, comprehensive, is it considered your fault, etc.).

I just saw a deer get whacked last week

Damn, that sucks man... good thing we don't have too many deer here in Florida. Although my sis' b-friend was on his way home the other night and found a dead gator that someone had hit. He said it was bigger than he was. I wonder how much damage a gator can do?

deer is usually not the driver's fault.

Sorry to hear it. I hope everything gets fixed without too much hassle. A friend of mine hit a deer once. He had a Buick Park Ave. The bumper was bent, hood was folded, headlights smashed. He said the deer jumped in front of him and was in the air when he hit it. There was blood all over the place. On the hood, in the engine bay.. We were washing the car down and there were little bits of deer and fur on the ground. The neighbors looked a bit scared. =P We didn't bother telling them it was a deer. Hahaa. Water running off the car was red. Pretty nasty.

The surface of the CF hood is still smooth but where the deer impacted it looks a little weird. If you can imagine what it would be like if you started bending carbon fiber at a really sharp angle, it sortof started getting stress cracks all through it and getting a little rough, the fiberglass frame separated from the surface of the hood and the frame is buckled in an upside-down V shape. The hood is curved like a bow. Hood's ruined, luckily I've still got my stock hood sitting in my garage.

The damage to the car is more extensive than I thought though. They were able to get the hood off and the radiator support and fender wells are crushed back like 6", fans knocked off the radiator, ac condensor crushed, etc. I was told the radiator it's self is fine, it was the oil from the AC condensor that went spraying all over the place, not coolant. I don't have rental coverage so I'm SOL there. I don't really have anything I HAVE to do besides go to work every night and luckily my roommate is unemployed so he can take me most of the time.

As for how they cover it it's covered under comprehensive but apparently I've got a bare bones policy so I'm going to have to pay a $200 deductible I was told which is My mom hit a deer last fall and didn't pay a dime. Hopefully the adjuster will get out there today or tomorrow so they can get crackin on fixing it. I'll take some pics if I'm able to get over there. I had just taken my digital camera out of my car the day before yesterday.

Then when i find out they found the kid he had no insurance and no money they told me i probably wont get anything unless i go to court, and still mayby nothing.

sorry to hear about your car, hope you get it back soon!
My $1000 deductible sux!

I hit (straddled) a deer at like 65MPH a few years back in my last maxima (1995). The car in front of me took it out, I didn't have too much front damage, but I "skinned" the deer and he took my exhaust system with him. They had to steam clean or something to the bottom of my car to get the skin and blood out. What sucked was that I was about 2 hours for home at about midnight and drove it all the way home not knowing what all was damaged. Skeered me! :þ

Boy..That is expensive meat...I hit a 7 point buck going with almost 70 miles...It weighted about 170 pounds, and I nailed him in Vermont. The animal control guy said that the hunters were keeping an eye on it (it was 1 day before season in VT). I had over 4k in damage, even I hit the leg part. The deer flew in the air (maybe 6-7 ft high),and had to be shot after...The most painful part was dealing with the insurance company, cause they intended to use aftermarket parts for the repair.I made quite a few calls, but no good result.Actually,it took longer than I thought to have the car repaired .It was in the shop for 4 weeks. After that,I added rental insurance to my policy, and belive me ,was a good Ideea. That was my second deer to hit . Deer accidents are considered compressive damage,so there is no change in the policy. Good luck getting your car back on the road.

Insureance company called me, they got my estimate done and my check written up. Total estimate came to a little over $4000.

Holy crap, I was figuring about $1600, $2000 tops.

On a side note the adjuster called me while he was out looking at my car and was like "How much did you pay for this hood you've got on here?" I told him $590 (which is true) and he was just like "OK cool, I'll add that in to the price of the estimate." I could have told him any figure (within reason) but I didn't want to lie to them so I didn't. I thought it was strange though as they had argued with me a few years ago over the cost of a $300 set of coilover sleeves on my Civic which I had reciepts for even, and they just took my word on a $590 hood. That was cool of them. I'm heading to go pick up the check now. Hope there are no more problems, knock on wood.

Did it look anything like this???

It should look like this shortly:

$7900 to fix it! They had to replace the entire engine wiring harness as the relay boxes were smashed as well. Took Nissan 3 weeks to get me the right harness so they got to rent me a land rover during that time as they told me to go and get anything that I wanted. Enterprise didn't have much, so I just got that.

And yeah, I know that I misspelled wreck, can't change it though as I no longer have access to that site.

Ouch, that's a nasty hit Neal, good thing you walked away from it.

On a more humourous note, you could do what some PETA activists tried to do when they hit deer in NJ. Sue the New Jersey State Fish and Game counsel

Here's the story
