pothole = bent rims... questions inside

Hey guys,

Last week I hit a massive pothole on my way to work. The hit was very severe. Anyways, I just had it checked out today and ALL FOUR rims are BENT!!! Three are minor but the one that took the brunt of the pothole hit is shot.

I remember something a while ago that a few people filed complaints with their cities about their bent rims and the city paid up. I am planning on doing this as well but I don't know where to start. Is there a website out there that tells me what to do? I'm in the San Fernando area (north valley of LA) so if anyone has info on how to go about doing this, I greatly appreciate it. TIA!

Regards,
Mike

It was city streets. Once I get in touch with the city, what do I say?

I'm not sure what year your car is but assuming you have full-coverage, I'd look into replacing the rims under insurance. If all 4 rims are bent it looks to me as if the situation was beyond your control, I mean we're not talking about hitting a curb or anything. Then ask your insurance to go after the city for your deductible. imho it's a losing battle BUT if it were me I'd want new rims. One bent rim is one thing, but all four is quite another. Good luck.

Thanks. I'll give my insurance a call tomorrow. The thing I'm worried about calling them is that they are going to jack up my rate (which is alreay high to begin with). Anyways, I also found a couple of claims forms for Caltrans and the city of Los Angeles. I'll talk with my insurance company as well and see what the best route is. Another thing is time. The ride is killing me!

I called up my insurance today and basically they don't cover it because they don't know what to put it under. Right now, I'm filing a complaint for damages with the city of LA and we'll see. In the meantime, I have to find new rims... BTW, this is for my Volvo not Maxima, and getting rims with a bolt pattern of 5x108mm is a complete biatch!

Take pictures of the pothole you hit before the city fixes it, and pictures of your bent rims...then take those pictures to the city...and hopefully they will pay for the damages.

Thanks! Doing that first thing tomorrow. The thing is that I don't think I can capture the damage very well on the rims. Three of them are minor but the 4th on is pretty visible though. Do you think it'll be easier to spot with the tires off the wheels?
