I would go with a Y first. Getting rid of those pre-cats is an important step to improved exhaust flow.

I think the first mod for your exhaust should be y-pipe, and if you want afterwards, do the Greddy. But definitely the y-pipe first.

Get the Y-pipe first, but why not just get a Budget Y-pipe for $180 shipped instead of the Cattman pipe? They are both quality made and will give you the same HP gains. And the cheapest price i have seen for the Greddy SP catback is $485 at www.adventon.com

haha...i'll keep that in mind. but wat is the actual funtionality of the Y-pipe. from the little research that i've done...i think it helps the car "breath smoother"(lack of a better technical term)...am i correct??? so is y-pipe a exhaust???

the y-pipe is part of the exhaust system. It has two inlets that meet at a "Y" connection and form one outlet pipe that connects to the catalytic convert. The furthest reaching inlet connects to the front bank of cylinder's exhaust manifold and removes exhaust. The middle inlet (closer to the outlet of pipe) connects to the rear exhaust manifold and removes exhaust from there. An aftermarket y-pipe is a straighter tube than the stock pipe and doesn't have pre-catalytic converts.

It is the part of your exhaust that goes from your engine's exhaust manifolds back to your Cat. In the stock Y, there are pre-cats which help clean up emmissions before the main cat is hot enough to work. The pre-cats are quite restrictive and the stock pipe has bad flow characteristics to say the least. An aftermarket Y has no pre-cats, it's just nice smooth pipe with mandrel bends, preferably. Budget Exhaust makes a quality pipe for a great price which is why many members of the .org reccomend them, but there are always different opinions on which manufacturer is the best.

check out their 'custom parts' to see the Y (they call it an F pipe though) and keep in mind all prices are in canadian dollars.

Does any Max owner in California have a Y-Pipe? I heard you can't pass emmissions here with one, is that correct? I would like to get one, but would also like to pass emissions.

When passing emissions testing, are you allowed to warm your car up before hand in order to pass emissions? Are y-pipes reversible or do they need to be welded on?

Here's more reading for ya! The pics and text are great. There are dyno plots showing the difference in performance between oem y-pipe and aftermarket pipe (Budget Exhaust's in this case).

There are 2 O2 sensors in the non-cali spec Ypipe (unsure about the cali cars)... if you crawl under your car you will see them screwed in perpendicular to the vertical section, one for each down-pipe.
