Auto tranny. If i choose to drive in 3 instead of D. Is it bad for the car. Is it bad to shift from D to 3. What is the difference between 3 and D?

d is overdrive and is there to help keep the revs down to get better mpg. i downshift from d to 3 on the highway to get better passing power and you may get slightly better throttle response down low but at the cost of losing mpg's.

its not going to hurt your car unless you do it often. every now and then wont do anything. just like revving a manual transmission higher then normal every now and then.

Neeferea,
If your are going down hill you can use 3 to use the engine to keep the car from speeding up if you don't like riding the brakes. I rarely drive uphill so I don't know if the tranny likes to shift between 3 and 4. Leaving it in 3 will keep if from hunting gears.

I usually always drive around with OD off in my car except on the highway. It keeps the tranny from hunting for gears like DAP said and the acceleration is much better.
