Just discovered Maxima.org Great idea!

I'm hoping someone can help me with my little problem, - or possible direct me to info that i can solve it myself.

I noticed (looks like a vacuum line) near the oil filter on a 1991 maxima SE. I don't know what to call it - but it almost looks like the a transmission pan upside down - out of the center there is a connection with a hose (vacuum line) coming out of it. It's extends about 1 ft. long - and it was just sitting there open ended on the other end. I never noticed it before - till the last time i changed the oil. Does this hose connect somewhere...or is it just a vent?
