Squishy front end plus clunking
Squishy front end plus clunking
hi,
the max has squishy front suspension. The front struts and ball joints are new ( withinh 6 Mo.). The tie rode ends are old yet are not loose at all. I jack the wheel up and shake it up and down and side to side no looseness. The Passender tire is wearing uneven got an alignment 6 months ago with new tires.
bushings are original and are not cracked. I wanna pinpoint the problem.

thats a negative jake.... funny the front end came up about 1.5" when i put new struts in. I figured it would handle better with new strts but its much worse. Bounce bounce bounce!! I replaced the stuts only a few weeks ago.(KYB GR2) I even ponder sometimes cutting a coil off the front springs....there is NO way it can ride any worse than it is now
PS I already replaced the rear struts as well

1. you should ahve gotten better struts. the KYB are crap.
2. look at your control arm bushings. with that kind of mileage, I'll bet they're gone. that'll cause the car to wander on the highway and dart different directions in corners.

My max had the same problem. It is the front bushing on the passenger control arm. It is not easy to see that it is worn because there is a giant flat washer behind the nut. You can tell its this if the steering wheel shifts to the right under hard acceleration. Also, you can check it by jacking up the car and pulling on the control arm with a pry bar. The bushings are integral to the arm. So, you have to replace to whole control arm ($180 new, $80 from a junk yard). It takes only about an hour to replace. There are procedures around to buy older generation bushings and press them on. But, it sounds like a pain. Just get another control arm.
My car had this problem (pretty severe too!) but you don't have to replace the whole control arm, just the bushings. PM Matt93SE above, he replaced mine and has a real good deal going. Thanx Matt.
