Weak/Uneven Acceleration

I bought a `95 SE automatic with around 110k miles a few weeks ago. There are few minor problems, but one serious one as follows:

Fair acceleration at partial throttle vs. poor acceleration at full throttle. I pretty much know what to expect out of the engine from driving an `01 automatic for the past couple years. Just from stoplight to stoplight, acceleration is as expected, if a little lackluster. When attempting to pass another car, for instance, however, putting the pedal to the floor often elicits no change in the RPM, and the pedal exibits no resistence. Even when the RPM does decide to go past 2.5, acceleration is not what it should be. Any suggestions where to look first?

I should mention I had been filling it up with regular, but plan to put premium in from now on.
