Wet Trunk Blues Update

Just short of a month ago, I posted a message about how frustrated I was about a leak that I have in the trunk of my '97 that would leave a wet spot around the top area of where the spare tire sits, but no where else.

I got some great suggestions and I continued to tinker around and try to search out the source of the leak, without success. Well, I just had my car serviced at the dealership, Monday, and I was told that the source of the leak was my rear window. The service tech said that they called an outside company to look at it and the company quoted me a repair price of $100 if they don't have to remove the window, to $300 if they do. (They used a hose to trace the leak.)Being that I had some other things done, I told them to hold off and I'll bring it back at another time for the repair. Now I do have a rear window that won't go down all the way, so I just leave it up. I don't know if it's the same window, though.

Here's something even stranger than the fact that the leak is coming from the rear window. During the past two weeks or so, the problem spot in the trunk has been almost completely dry. This is extremely crazy because the Northern Virginia area has had heavy rains almost every other day for weeks on end -- we're getting pretty tired of it. I can't figure this thing out!

Any way, I do plan on getting the repair done so I can assure that my trunk will stay dry and clean, but I felt it necessary to post this information because so many of my fellow Maxima owners were kind enough to reply and give me suggestions on fixing the leak. For those of you who are still dealing with the same type of problem, maybe it could be coming from your window, too.

if the rear window leaks that means rear glass not your door glass.i dont see why you cant find a leak yourself with a hose and a friend(friend gets to pour water on trunk and glass while you are in the trunk trying to find a leak)make sure its a friend you could trustalso while in the trunk, look for rust traces under rear glass.hope this helps

You are absolutely right, Tattoo.

It is the back winshield Nu Seal (the company that gave the estimate for repair) said is the source of the leak.

Since I'm going to hold off on the repair, I probably will try to at least look for the source of the leak. Strangely enough, even with more rain since my post from yesterday, the trunk is still dry.

Thanks for the tip.

Dude, my advise is to get it fixed. Depending on where the leak is and how the water is flowing, it could be setting on top of your rear deck lid (where your speakers are). If is sets there too long, and often enough you will rust that out. My wifes old Nova had that problem (over a long peroid of time) and the entire rear deck had to be replaced. Either do it now, or have even more repairs the longer you wait. When it comes to windshields and rear windows, just let them fix it. They garuantee the seal I'm sure and will get it done right the first time.

Thanks for the tip, MdMaxDrvr.

I am going to go with your suggestion and the leak repaired, but I'll also try the previous suggestion I got to at least see if I can locate the source of the leak.

Your comment about the rear deck, where the speakers are, is duly noted. I just had some Sony Xplod speakers put in front/rear and I don't want those in the rear to be damaged or short out. Again, it's wierd. When I was feeling around the rubber seal where the back rear window meets the trunk, I saw no sign of water damage or rust, not around the rubber seal, nor around the area where the speakers are installed. I guess I shouldn't complain about that, though.

You could always take it to another glass repair place, they could give you another opinion. If the leak is around the rear window I'm not sure the trunk seal being a problem but its worth a shot.

Have a friend sit in your trunk with a flash light and hose it down. Try to keep the water away from the window as much as possible at first and see if anything comes up, then start around the window.

Like I said though, if it is the window don't play around, have it fixed. Its worth the money not to have your car rust from the inside out.
