Whining noise at low RPMs

I'm getting this whinnig noise that sounds like CD-ROM loading (that the best i can discribe it). I only hear it at around 2k rmps at low speeds when I accelerate slowly, like coming out of turns. There is no noise when car is not moving. Anyone had this problem?

Sounds to me like it may be the power steering pump. Is it worse when you are turning? I started to hear that when i turned. I had to replace the power steering pump. It is not cover by power train warranty. I ended up paying around $500. I hope yours is something else

I just came back from a short drive. The noise doesn't get any worse when I turn. Straight line or turn sounds the same. It's not always there. I can only hear it around 2k rpm and only when I push on the gas pedal. I only hear it a bit andonce rpms go up a bit it disaappears. 80 miles left till warranty is up. No driving around this weekend. I'm going to a dealer Monday.

If its sort of a whistle/air sound it could be a vacuum or intake air-leak. Check your intake to make sure its tight.

It's not an intake. I know how it sounds. This sounds like an electric motor on remote control cars or when you put a CD in Bose you hear this weeee sound. that what this sound reminds me. I'm gonna go to a local shop. I know the owner and have him listen. I do have an appointment at Nissan dealer, but I don't want to get a call in the afternoon say: " we could not dublicate the problem...". I want to go in with knowing what's wrong and have them sheck it out.

Yea the only reason I say intake or vacuum is b/c you said it only does it while driving i.e. engine under a load or so.. If it was those that would explain why you couldn't duplicate it sitting still. Accessories you should be able to duplicate sitting still or by sawing steering if it was the p/s pump. Only other thought is it could be your tranny, or a wheel bearing since you have to be moving to duplicate it. Does it do this in all gears or just certain ones? Does the sound pitch change when you change gears (rpm) or does it progress along with the speed of the tires? Any change when the clutch is engaged/disengaged?

I have a 2000 five-speed as well. Get your tranny checked ASAP! At about 55K miles, mine was making similar noises and it turned out that nearly all the transmission bearings were shot. Look for metal shavings on the drain plug. If this is the problem, the noise will get progressively worse. Don't ignore it.

The repair was covered under warranty.

Good luck.
